Stephen Sommers’ 1999 The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, still draws attention—but the available evidence points to renewed interest, not a measured, widespread rediscovery. A May 2026 report placed it on Peacock’s U.S. movie chart for one day, while 2026 coverage revisited the film and its cast. The “26 years later” framing fits its 2025 anniversary; the movie opened on May 7, 1999, so it is 27 years old as of October 2026.
Which Mummy are fans rediscovering?
This is the 1999 adventure directed by Stephen Sommers, with Fraser as Rick O’Connell and Weisz as Evelyn Carnahan. It is distinct from the 2017 The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, and from Lee Cronin’s 2026 horror film. Rotten Tomatoes’ March 2026 retrospective describes the 1999 film as drawing on old adventure serials and Indiana Jones while adding supernatural horror and comedy.
Why does the film still appeal to action fans?
It moves between genres
The film’s defining quality is its blend of spectacle, humor, scares, adventure, and romance. Fraser described the appeal as taking part in a movie where “we didn’t know if it was an action, comedy, horror, adventure, romance. All of the above.” In a November 3, 2022 Popverse interview, he also said that watching it later made him feel nostalgic, adding that he watches the other performers rather than himself.
It treats danger as a thrill ride
Fraser later contrasted the 1999 film’s tone with the 2017 version. In Variety’s November 2025 coverage, he said the earlier movie had “fun” as an ingredient and argued that The Mummy should be a “thrill ride,” not terrifying. That is Fraser’s view of the films’ tonal difference, not a claim that all viewers respond to them the same way.

What evidence shows renewed interest?
ComingSoon reported that, according to FlixPatrol, the film ranked No. 8 on Peacock’s U.S. movie chart on May 21, 2026. That is a single-day chart position—not a viewing total, a season-long trend, or proof of a broad resurgence. A 2026 CinemaBlend feature also discussed a cast reunion and its writer’s rewatch, and reported Fraser’s comment that fan interest was a reason to make another installment. Together, these are signs of ongoing affection and renewed conversation, but they do not establish how many people watched the movie or how interest has changed over time.
How to watch or own the 1999 film
Universal Pictures At Home lists the 1999 film in 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital, Blu-ray + Digital, and DVD formats. Its trilogy collection includes The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). Check the edition details carefully to distinguish the Fraser film from other titles with the same name.

Streaming availability can change by date and territory. CinemaBlend reported Hulu availability in March 2026, and the May Peacock chart report shows the film appeared on that service’s U.S. chart on that date; neither report confirms current availability. Check the catalog in your region before planning to stream it.
