Yes. In a 2012 interview, Anne Rice agreed that Louis and Lestat could be described as a same-sex couple with children, and called Claudia their daughter. She was discussing the graphic adaptation Interview With The Vampire: Claudia’s Story—not commenting on the later AMC television series.
What Anne Rice said about Louis, Lestat, and Claudia
In an interview published by io9 on October 17, 2012, interviewer Kaila Hale-Stern raised the idea that Louis and Lestat were Claudia’s parents. Rice said she had not previously thought of them in those terms, then described them as “the first vampire same-sex parents.” When asked, “So I can say, they’re a same-sex couple with children?” Rice answered: “Absolutely! Claudia! She’s their daughter.”
The exchange is direct evidence that Rice accepted the description. It was prompted by Interview With The Vampire: Claudia’s Story, Ashley Marie Witter’s graphic adaptation told from Claudia’s perspective. Rice said Yen Press had proposed the adaptation and that she regarded it as legitimate.
What “daughter” means in this family
Rice’s use of “daughter” describes Claudia’s place in a family unit, not biological parenthood. In an archived official FAQ, Rice explained that her vampires cannot procreate because they are dead and have no living sperm. The interview supports calling Louis and Lestat Claudia’s parents in a familial sense; it does not suggest they biologically conceived her.
#1 Best Overall
- Anne Rice
- Interview with the Vampire
- "dark gift"
- Louis' first-person confession to a skeptical boy--transformed the vampire from a hideous predator into a highly sympathetic, seductive, and all-too-human figure
- The story is that of Louis, a wealthy eighteenth century Louisiana plantation owner who became a vampire in the depths of his despair over his brother's suicide
Keep the books and screen adaptations distinct
Rice’s 2012 statement should not be attributed to AMC’s television adaptation. A 2022 TV Insider article discusses how the AMC series makes the relationship’s homoerotic subtext more explicit and depicts Louis and Lestat raising Claudia together. That is context about the show, not the source of Rice’s own words.
A PBS literary profile also describes Louis and Lestat as married and raising an adopted daughter. That is a secondary interpretation; the clearest evidence for Rice’s own framing remains her 2012 interview.
