East Fremantle’s George Street Festival was paused for 2025, not formally declared permanently cancelled. The Town later adopted a different, smaller-scale events strategy for 2026–2031. PerthNow reported that the traditional festival was not included in the 2026/27 calendar, but the available announcements do not rule out a future return.
What happened to the George Street Festival?
On 19 March 2025, the Town of East Fremantle announced that it would pause the festival for that year. Mayor Jim O’Neill said, “We acknowledge that many local businesses, residents and stallholders will be disappointed by the decision to pause the festival this year, but the time is right for a review.” The Town described the decision as a chance to review the event, consult the community and plan for a sustainable events program—not as a permanent cancellation.
The Town’s August 2026 announcement confirmed that Council had adopted its first Events Strategy for 2026–2031 and a 2026/27 events calendar. PerthNow reported on 30 August 2026 that the traditional George Street Festival was not on that schedule. That absence is meaningful, but it is not the same as a formal announcement that the festival can never return. The Town says its calendar will be updated annually.
Why was the festival paused?
The Town said delivering the festival had become increasingly difficult for one of Perth’s smallest local governments. It cited rising costs, inconsistent external sponsorship and the staff capacity needed to stage an event that met community expectations. The pause was intended to give the Town time to review the festival’s scope and long-term sustainability, and to consult residents, businesses, clubs and community groups.

The scale and cost behind the decision
In its 2025 announcement, the Town reported around 7,500 attendees in 2007, an estimated 17,000 in 2023 and about 15,000 in 2024, when inclement weather affected crowd numbers. It also said the festival budget had increased by almost 50% since 2017 and put the 2024 festival budget at $163,000.
A Council agenda presented a separate accounting figure: an estimated 2024 delivery cost of about $153,000 excluding GST, including the Council contribution and staff costs, alongside external funding and stallholder fees. These are different figures with different descriptions; they should not be treated as interchangeable estimates of the same budget.

Options Council considered
The Council agenda recorded several possible paths, including reducing the event’s scope, seeking external event support, pausing for a year to survey the community, holding the festival biennially, moving it to another location, staging several smaller events or ceasing delivery altogether. Elected members favoured a pause-and-consult approach. The agenda also proposed a smaller Community Park event for summer 2025/26, explicitly not as a replacement for the George Street Festival.
What replaced the old event model?
After the pause, the Town invited community feedback in October 2025 to help shape an events strategy and annual calendar. The consultation asked what outcomes mattered to residents, businesses, clubs and community groups, while also considering the Town’s available resources.

A draft strategy published in June 2026 proposed moving away from one large event towards smaller, partnership-led and financially sustainable events. Its guiding principles were community connection; celebrating East Fremantle; sustainability and safety; and collaboration and partnerships. Mayor Tony Natale acknowledged the attachment to the former event: “We know how much the community loved East Fremantle’s George Street Festival and that it will be missed.”
The adopted 2026–2031 strategy
In August 2026, the Town said Council had adopted the strategy and the 2026/27 calendar. The program includes eight new events and activations as well as familiar activities, with locations including George Street and the foreshore. The Town also said Bites and Beats had returned after its first event in February 2026. It did not describe Bites and Beats—or any other single event—as a replacement for the George Street Festival.

The new approach differs from the former festival in its planned scale and distribution: rather than centring the annual program on one large event, it uses multiple smaller activities and partnerships across Town locations. The strategy’s principles include sustainability, safety, accessibility and community participation, but those principles alone do not establish that any individual new event is equivalent to the old festival. The Town says the calendar will evolve and be updated annually, while the strategy will be reviewed every four years. Mayor Tony Natale said, “The Town is committed to being agile and to learning along the way.”

A return has not been confirmed. The clearest current picture is that the 2025 festival was paused, the Town has since adopted a smaller and more distributed events model, and PerthNow reported that the traditional festival was absent from the 2026/27 schedule. The Town’s adoption announcement does not say the festival has been permanently ended, so its longer-term status remains unresolved.
