Their real affection also gave texture to an on-screen dynamic in which Baker’s heel character mocked Schiavone’s former Starbucks job—but the television story was not a romance or a real feud.
How did Britt Baker and Tony Schiavone become friends?
Baker traced the friendship to her first live promos with Schiavone. At a 2022 San Diego Comic-Con roundtable, she recalled that she had never done a live promo and thought of the veteran broadcaster as a “security blanket”—someone whose experience could help if a segment went off track. She said they began spending time together backstage, then texting and calling. At the time, she also said they FaceTimed every other day; that describes the frequency she reported then, not necessarily their current routine. 411MANIA’s transcript of the roundtable records her account.
In a separate interview, Baker said Schiavone was among the first people she called when something good or bad happened. She credited his presence with helping her through early heel promos: knowing he was there made the live work feel less intimidating. In January 2022, she described him as one of her best friends. POST Wrestling’s interview transcript includes those remarks.
What role did Adam Cole play in Schiavone’s support?
Schiavone described another part of their bond: when Adam Cole was away, Cole asked him to make sure Baker was okay. On AEW Unrestricted, Schiavone said that he became “her substitute dad in many ways on the road.” WrestleTalk’s October 21, 2021, transcript reports his account. It presents a story of care and friendship, not evidence of a romantic relationship between Baker and Schiavone.

How did their friendship connect to their AEW characters?
Their off-screen rapport could coexist with an antagonistic television dynamic. Baker’s heel character mocked Schiavone’s previous employment at Starbucks, a bit associated with her heel turn on the Jericho Cruise. Slam Wrestling’s account of Tony Khan’s remarks says the moment led to substantial character interaction and an on-screen friendship. Slam Wrestling’s report describes Khan’s comments.
The distinction matters: Baker’s real-life affection for Schiavone and his help with her early promos are separate from the roles they played on AEW television. Their trust gave the performances a natural ease, while the Starbucks taunt belonged to the storyline. Baker had already called Schiavone her “shoot best friend in real life” in an August 2021 interview, as transcribed by Fightful.

Why was Schiavone a reassuring presence for Baker?
Schiavone brought extensive broadcast experience to their early AEW segments. AEW’s official biography says he has broadcast professional wrestling since 1983. It also says he returned to TBS with AEW Dynamite in October 2019 and describes his AEW roles as lead announcer on Collision, analyst on Dynamite and pay-per-view shows, and interviewer across AEW programming. That background helps explain why a performer learning live promos valued having him nearby.

Baker and Schiavone described a close friendship and mutual support in interviews from 2021 and 2022. Those accounts establish what they said at those times; they do not verify whether their contact frequency or relationship is unchanged in October 2026. The reported story supports friendship and mentorship, while the on-screen tension and affection belong to AEW’s character work.
