On September 2, 2021, ABBA announced Voyage, their first new studio album in about 40 years, and a London concert project featuring digital versions of all four members with a live 10-piece band. The album, which followed 1981’s The Visitors, was released on November 5, 2021. The concert concept helped inspire the new recordings as well as the digital stage show.
What ABBA announced in 2021
The September 2 announcement brought Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad back together in the recording studio. ABBA said the sessions had produced new music after almost four decades apart. The two songs named at the announcement were “I Still Have Faith In You” and “Don’t Shut Me Down”; both were intended to feature in the concert.
ABBA described the return as the first time in 40 years. That referred to making music together again and releasing a new album—not to the availability of ABBA’s earlier music or to the members never appearing together publicly. The group’s official history says they decided to take a break at the end of 1982.
What is on the Voyage album?
Voyage is a ten-song studio album, with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus as its principal songwriters and producers, and vocals by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. ABBA’s official history says the songs were recorded over four years at Andersson’s Riksmixningsverket studio in Stockholm. “I Still Have Faith In You” and “Don’t Shut Me Down” were the first two songs recorded in those sessions. Universal announced the album’s worldwide release for November 5, 2021.

For the band, the concert project was more than a companion promotion: the idea of presenting ABBA onstage again provided the creative spark for recording new material. The album and show remain distinct projects, however—one is a studio release, the other a live concert built around digital performers.
How the ABBA Voyage concert worked
The concert presented digital versions of the four members performing in a purpose-built arena in London, accompanied by a live 10-piece band. Universal said motion-capture and performance techniques were used with the members, with an 850-person Industrial Light & Magic team involved in creating the digital versions. The announcement gave the arena a stated capacity of 3,000. ABBA’s official history records that it opened on May 27, 2022.

In their announcement, the members said they expected to “sit back in an audience and watch our digital selves perform our songs” in the custom-built arena, calling the prospect “weird and wonderful.” Director Baillie Walsh, who led the project, recalled watching ABBA win Eurovision in 1974 and said he had not imagined working with them 47 years later.
Why the “40 years” wording needs context
The time span describes ABBA’s return to collaborative recording and a new album after the group’s break. It does not mean the band’s recordings disappeared for 40 years: their earlier catalogue remained available. Nor does the phrase establish that the four members had no public appearances together during that period. ABBA’s own September 2021 statement put it simply: “It’s been a while since we made music together. Almost 40 years, actually.”
