The public dispute between Taylor Swift and Kanye West began when West interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. It appeared to thaw in 2015, then reignited over West’s song “Famous” and a phone call whose meaning the participants disputed. The excerpts released in 2016 and a longer recording leaked in 2020 are separate releases; neither establishes private intent beyond what was said and reported.
How the dispute began: the 2009 VMAs
September 13, 2009: West interrupts Swift
Swift had just won Best Female Video for “You Belong With Me” at the MTV Video Music Awards when West took the microphone during her acceptance speech and said Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. Beyoncé later invited Swift back onstage during her own acceptance. The incident became the defining starting point of their public dispute. The Los Angeles Times timeline recounts the episode.
2009–2010: apologies and renewed comments
West apologized in the immediate aftermath and later apologized publicly again. Swift addressed the incident with humor on Saturday Night Live and performed “Innocent” at the 2010 VMAs. West later revisited the episode in interviews and defended his actions. The public tone shifted over this period; it was not one uninterrupted confrontation. A public thaw, then a new conflict
August 2015: Swift presents West with an award
Swift presented West with MTV’s Video Vanguard award. Their onstage exchange echoed the 2009 incident and was widely seen as a sign of reconciliation. West thanked her, while also criticizing awards shows in his speech. The moment showed a public thaw, not a guarantee that the dispute was over. Billboard’s account describes the exchange.

February 2016: “Famous” brings the dispute back
West released “Famous” on The Life of Pablo, including a lyric about Swift. West said Swift had approved the lyric. Swift’s representative said West had asked her to promote the single, not approved the disputed wording, and had not told her about it. Those conflicting claims made the central question what Swift knew and approved before release; the participants did not agree on the answer. Swift’s Grammys speech
After her album 1989 won Album of the Year at the Grammys, Swift told young women that people might try to undercut their success or take credit for their accomplishments or fame. She did not name West, but the speech was widely read as a response to him. Billboard’s timeline places the speech in the dispute’s chronology.

Kim Kardashian, the excerpts, and the competing accounts
June–July 2016: Kardashian speaks and posts excerpts
Kardashian told GQ that Swift knew about the lyrics and approved them. Swift’s representative again said the disputed wording had not been shared with her. Kardashian then posted edited excerpts of the phone call on Snapchat. Swift responded that the excerpts did not show West telling her about the insulting phrase and argued that a person cannot approve a song they have not heard. These are opposing accounts, not a settled finding about anyone’s intent. GQ’s interview and the Los Angeles Times timeline describe the exchange.
In a statement responding to the Snapchat excerpts, Swift said: “I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one that I have never asked to be a part of, since 2009.” The Los Angeles Times reproduced the statement in its timeline of the dispute.

2016: the “Famous” video
West’s video for “Famous” included a nude wax figure resembling Swift among figures resembling other celebrities. The video broadened the public argument beyond whether Swift had approved the lyric. The Los Angeles Times timeline also recounts the video’s role.
What the full phone-call leak in 2020 showed—and did not settle
In March 2020, a longer recording of the call appeared online. The Washington Post described it as 25 minutes long. That recording was distinct from the edited excerpts Kardashian posted in 2016.

Swift said the leaked recording supported her account that the specific insulting phrase had not been disclosed during the call. Kardashian disputed Swift’s framing and responded publicly. The reporting on the released recording supports describing what it contains and what the participants said; it does not establish private intent beyond that evidence. 2019: Swift looks back on the call and conflict
In an interview discussed by Rolling Stone, Swift described the call and the surrounding events as part of a longer chain of conflict, rather than an isolated episode. Rolling Stone’s timeline discusses her account.

December 2023: Swift describes the personal impact
In her TIME Person of the Year interview, Swift described the backlash as a career death and recounted isolation and psychological distress. Those are her retrospective descriptions of her experience, not independently measured effects. TIME’s interview presents her account.
April 2024: a song interpreted as an allusion
Rolling Stone connected Swift’s song “thanK you aIMee” with Kardashian and the earlier dispute. That is a press interpretation of an apparent allusion, not a direct confirmation from Swift in the reporting cited here. Rolling Stone’s timeline discusses the song and its 2024 album context.
What the timeline can—and cannot—establish
- The public origin point was West interrupting Swift’s 2009 VMAs acceptance speech.
- Swift’s 2015 award presentation to West signaled a visible public thaw, but conflict returned the following year.
- The 2016 argument centered on whether Swift had heard and approved the specific “Famous” lyric; West, Swift, and Kardashian offered conflicting accounts.
- The 2016 Snapchat excerpts and the longer 2020 leak are different releases. The longer recording informs what was said on the call, but does not by itself settle private motives or every disputed claim.
- Swift’s later descriptions of her experience and press interpretations of her music should be understood as different kinds of evidence.
The available reporting establishes a chronology of public events and statements, not a definitive account of private motives or the participants’ current private relations.
