Is A Thousand Blows worth watching?
For viewers who like period crime dramas built around volatile characters, yes. Created by Steven Knight, the series puts bare-knuckle boxing, gangland maneuvering, and Victorian London’s social pressures in the same frame. Its strongest asset is the cast: Graham makes Sugar Goodson dangerous and compelling, and Erin Doherty gives Mary Carr an equally vivid presence.
The show is not simply a boxing drama. Its first season follows Jamaican friends Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall) as they enter East London’s illegal boxing scene. Hezekiah’s growing reputation brings him to Mary Carr, associated with the Forty Elephants, while Sugar sees the newcomer as a threat. The collision between the ring and the gang’s criminal world gives the series more texture than a straightforward rise-and-fall sports story.
Season two changes the emphasis. Set a year after the first season, it moves toward revenge and recovery: Hezekiah is diminished, Sugar is estranged from his family, and Mary returns to rebuild the Forty Elephants, according to Disney’s season-two announcement. That shift broadens the drama but also makes the balance between the boxing story and the gang’s maneuvering less assured.

That unevenness is reflected in the critical response. Rotten Tomatoes displayed season scores of 88% for season one and 93% for season two when accessed October 7, 2026; those are changeable aggregator figures, not proof of unanimous praise. In a January 2026 review, The Daily Beast’s Nick Schager praised the performers’ charisma but criticized season two’s plotting as perfunctory and its present-day political framing as preachy. The result is a show with real dramatic appeal, but not one whose every storyline lands with equal force.
Is Stephen Graham good in A Thousand Blows?
Graham is one of the series’ main reasons to watch. As Sugar Goodson, he plays a veteran fighter whose menace is bound up with pride, vulnerability, and a sense of ownership over his world. The performance gives Sugar weight beyond the threat he poses to Hezekiah: he feels like a man whose standing is being challenged, not a stock villain waiting to be defeated.

Doherty is a strong counterweight as Mary Carr. Schager’s review specifically called Graham and Doherty “a charismatic pair,” and their scenes help anchor the show when its plot becomes less focused. The ensemble also includes Kirby and Lovehall as the friends at the story’s center; season two adds Catherine McCormack as Sophie Lyons and Ned Dennehy as Bull Jeremy, as Disney announced.
Is A Thousand Blows based on a true story?
It is historical fiction inspired by real people and events, not a faithful reconstruction. Disney+ identifies the Forty Elephants as a real London shoplifting gang and Mary Carr as a figure associated with them. It also describes Hezekiah Moscow as a real West Indian boxer about whom little is known. The series invents events and relationships around those historical touchpoints.

Knight has been candid about the looseness of the adaptation. Speaking to TechRadar about season two, the creator and writer said, “I would imagine, 35% real or something like that.” He described real dates, fights, boxing bouts, and robberies as “stepping stones” for the story. That informal estimate is Knight’s own characterization, not an independent measure of the show’s historical accuracy.

Both seasons have six hour-long episodes, according to Disney+. Season one is the clearer entry point if the draw is the boxing conflict; season two gives Mary and the Forty Elephants more room within the larger criminal drama. Whether that expansion works will depend on how much the viewer values the gangland story alongside the fights.

Where can you watch A Thousand Blows?
In the United States, Hulu lists both seasons and all 12 episodes on its official series page. Disney announced season two’s January 9, 2026 streaming release on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ in the UK and Ireland. Catalogs and availability can change, so check the service listing for your region.
The first season premiered February 21, 2025, as a six-part drama set in 1880s Victorian London. Knight created, wrote, and executive-produced the series; Graham is also an executive producer. The first season’s directing team included Tinge Krishnan, Nick Murphy, Ashley Walters, and Coky Giedroyc, with scripts by Knight and writers Ameir Brown, Insook Chappell, Harlan Davies, and Yasmin Joseph.
