The Lotus and the Swan, Nirmal Chander’s 71-minute documentary, follows Sardar Gurcharan Singh’s life and work as a pioneer of studio pottery in India. Made by the Delhi Blue Pottery Trust, the film brings together interviews, archival material and close views of pottery to explore how Singh joined the usefulness of everyday objects with an insistence on beauty.
Who was Gurcharan Singh?
Sardar Gurcharan Singh was a potter, teacher and mentor whose work helped make studio pottery more visible in India. Rather than treating pottery only as mass production or decoration, he gave individual attention to forms meant for daily use: bowls, mugs, plates, jugs and teapots. His practice asked those objects to work well and to have aesthetic presence.
According to Scroll’s 2023 account, Singh was born in the 1910s and died in 1995 at the age of 99. He studied pottery at Tokyo’s Higher Technical School in 1919, where he met British potter Bernard Leach and Japanese potter Shoji Hamada. After returning to India, he worked at Delhi Potteries; following Partition in 1947, he became Superintendent of the Pottery Training Centre in Ambala, according to The AIDEM’s account of the film.
What does The Lotus and the Swan cover?
Directed by Nirmal Chander and produced by the Delhi Blue Pottery Trust, the documentary builds a portrait of Singh through family members, associates and students, alongside archival material and filmed pottery. The AIDEM describes research into works held in India and abroad and filming in Japan. The film’s emphasis is not only on the finished vessels but on the making, teaching and long commitment behind them.

Scroll’s April 2023 feature reported that the film had recently premiered in Delhi. William Morris Gallery later listed a UK premiere screening for 27 June 2024, describing the 2023 documentary as 71 minutes with English subtitles. Both are past events; those listings do not establish where the film can be watched now.
How did Singh bring utility and beauty together?
Singh’s everyday wares were functional, but functionality was not a reason to neglect form. The film’s framing of “utility and beauty” points to a central ambition of studio pottery: to make useful things whose shape, surface and character also reward attention. Singh’s work gave household pottery an artistic dimension without requiring it to stop being household pottery.

His education and relationships in Japan formed part of a wider conversation about handmade objects. The AIDEM places his choice of studio pottery alongside the Mingei movement’s interest in handmade objects for everyday use. That connection is useful context, not proof that Singh simply copied Japanese or Korean styles. Scroll notes both Asian influences in how some studio potters interpret his work and Indian touches in his wares; it also observes that the film could have explored the Asian influences in greater depth.
How did Singh influence other potters?
Singh’s influence extended through institutions and personal teaching. Scroll gives 1952 as the founding year of Delhi Blue Art Pottery and says he established the Delhi Blue Pottery Trust in 1995. His students and associates carried his example forward, as did his son Mansimran Singh, himself a studio potter.

The documentary also presents teaching as a practice of sharing skills and respect for the material. A teacher’s recollection, quoted by Scroll, preserves Singh’s advice: “You can’t make anyone a ceramist, but you can make people respect clay.” The AIDEM similarly describes his teaching as generous and practical, and says he encouraged students to pass on what they had learned.
The AIDEM account says that a 1986 government decision to reclaim part of the land allotted for Singh’s Ring Road kiln and studio constrained his working space. This is that source’s account of the episode. Scroll offers a smaller, intimate measure of his devotion: on the day he died, Singh had glazed bowls waiting to be fired in his kiln.

What the film adds to Singh’s legacy
The Lotus and the Swan makes the case for remembering Singh through both objects and relationships: the pots he made, the discipline of his studio practice and the students who continued the work. Dharamshala International Film Festival calls him the “father of studio pottery in India”; that is the festival’s description, rather than a formal or uncontested ranking. The documentary’s lasting interest lies in showing why his legacy can be understood through the ordinary vessels he shaped as much as through the people he taught.
