Yes—A Minecraft Movie can be a funny, lively family adventure, especially if Jack Black’s familiar comic energy is a selling point rather than a drawback. That is the qualified verdict of Devindra Hardawar’s April 2, 2025, Engadget review: the film’s playful performances and recognizable Minecraft ideas work better than its conventional story or its more polished, over-designed look.
What is A Minecraft Movie about?
Steve enters the Overworld after discovering a portal. The story then brings together siblings Henry and Natalie, Garret Garrison, and Dawn, who encounter Steve and try to repair a broken object so they can get home. Warner Bros. and Legendary’s 2025 activity pack describes the group as four misfits joining expert crafter Steve on a quest.

That premise sets up a trip through Minecraft’s familiar world and ideas without requiring viewers to know the game. This is a spoiler-light outline, not a promise that the movie’s plot is especially surprising.
What makes the movie work?
Jack Black and Jason Momoa commit to the silliness
In Engadget, Hardawar calls the film surprisingly funny for a children’s movie and credits director Jared Hess with bringing a quirky sensibility to the material. Black’s Steve is central to that effect: his comic persona makes the absurdity of turning Minecraft into a movie part of the joke. Momoa, as Garret Garrison, supplies a broad, energetic counterpoint.

The humor is the film’s clearest strength, but it is also a matter of taste. If Black’s established screen persona wears thin for you, the same performance that gives the movie its comic engine may become its biggest irritation.
The game references are part of the fun
The film draws on recognizable creatures and gameplay tricks, as well as the pleasure of making things. Hardawar responds to its message about creativity and describes children reacting warmly to elements such as pandas and game-like mechanics at a screening. That is one reviewer’s account of one screening—not evidence of how children generally respond.
Where does it fall short?
The story is more familiar than the setting
The basic quest gives the characters a reason to travel through the Overworld, but the film’s story and character development are conventional. PC Gamer’s April 2, 2025, review roundup captures the divide in the critical response: some takes it summarizes find the adaptation entertaining and funny, while others object to its rushed story and thin character work. That roundup reflects differing reviews, not a formal aggregate score.

It helps to separate two questions when judging the movie: whether it is entertaining in the moment, and whether its narrative gives the characters much depth. A viewer can enjoy the performances and Minecraft details while still finding the plot hurried or predictable.

Hardawar’s other notable reservation is the visual design. The movie’s interpretation feels more polished and over-designed to the reviewer than Minecraft’s simpler aesthetic. Whether that difference is a flaw depends partly on what you want from an adaptation: a close match for the game’s spare visual language, or a movie-built version of its world.
Is it a good family movie?
Its kid-friendly humor, colorful creatures, and game references give families an accessible starting point, while the broad comedy may land differently with adults and children. The screening reaction Hardawar recounts is a small anecdote, so it cannot establish that children as a group will enjoy it. For a household deciding together, the most useful question is whether the adults are comfortable with Black’s high-energy comic style and a straightforward adventure rather than a more developed story.

How did critics respond?
The evidence here supports a mixed response, not a consensus verdict. Hardawar’s Engadget review is positive about the film’s comedy and performances but critical of its story and visual choices. PC Gamer’s roundup similarly describes a range of reactions, from favorable assessments of its entertainment value to dismissive judgments; it quotes brief characterizations from outlets including IGN, Polygon, and GamesRadar. Those phrases are individual outlets’ opinions as relayed by the roundup, not a rating or a single shared conclusion.
For that reason, “good, actually” is best read as a particular reviewer’s qualified enthusiasm, not a claim that critics agree. The film’s appeal depends on whether its comic performances and game-world play outweigh familiar storytelling for you.
