Spoilers ahead for all six episodes of The Night Manager season 2. This is a subjective ranking, not an official or consensus list. The order weighs how well each episode escalates danger, develops Pine’s shifting identity and loyalties, clarifies the conspiracy, and delivers setup or payoff. A longer episode or a larger plot turn does not automatically rank higher.

Season 2 follows Jonathan Pine—living as MI6 officer Alex Goodwin—into an operation involving Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos. To get inside Teddy’s world, Pine adopts the identity Matthew Ellis, with Roxana Bolaños helping him infiltrate the operation. The six episodes move from a threat to Pine’s carefully built cover to a confrontation over a coup plot.

Amazon’s Prime Video catalog lists the episode summaries and runtimes; TV Guide also lists six episodes. Neither source publishes a quality ranking, so the placements below are editorial judgments. Prime Video’s season listing and TV Guide’s episode guide provide episode details.

The Night Manager season 2 episode rankings

1. Episode 5 — “Matthew Ellis is exposed”

Runtime: 1 hour 1 minute, according to Prime Video.

#1 Best Overall
The Night Manager - Season 2 [Blu-ray]
  • The Night Manager - Season 2 [Blu-ray]

This is the season’s strongest pivot because Pine’s cover stops being a source of tension in the abstract and becomes an immediate problem he must manage. Once Matthew Ellis is exposed, Pine negotiates with Gilberto Hanson and then works covertly to dismantle Teddy’s operation from inside. The change forces him to make consequential choices under pressure, while the plot’s competing interests become more legible. It earns the top spot for turning accumulated danger into action without making the episode’s payoff depend on spectacle.

2. Episode 4 — “The coup plot comes into focus”

Runtime: 1 hour 1 minute, according to Prime Video.

Pine has evidence of a British-backed effort to overthrow Colombia’s government, and the personal cost of his infiltration rises as Teddy’s trust in Matthew erodes and Hanson pursues him. This is the best episode for connecting the Cartagena shipment to the wider conspiracy: the stakes sharpen while Pine’s position grows less secure. It ranks just below episode 5 because the revelations and pressure are powerful setup, whereas the next episode makes the cover crisis decisive.

3. Episode 3 — “Pine’s plan starts to unravel”

Runtime: 1 hour 1 minute, according to Prime Video.

Pine gains Teddy’s confidence and finds evidence tying the shipment to covert British intelligence interests, but his plan begins to go wrong. The episode balances progress with the cost of getting closer to Teddy: each gain makes the deception more dangerous. Its central reveal gives the conspiracy a clearer shape, and the emerging complications keep that clarity from feeling like a simple briefing. It sits in the middle of the ranking because it is an effective bridge between infiltration and open peril, rather than the season’s most complete payoff.

4. Episode 6 — “A winner-takes-all confrontation”

Runtime: 1 hour 1 minute, according to Prime Video.

Pine and Teddy work together against Hanson’s coup, but Hanson has a new ally, setting up the final confrontation. The episode has the arc’s largest closing stakes, and its alliance shift gives the finale a consequential change in loyalties. I rank it below episodes 3–5 because the official episode description establishes the confrontation and its setup, but not enough detail to claim that every strand resolves cleanly or that the ending is the season’s strongest character payoff.

5. Episode 2 — “Matthew Ellis enters Teddy’s operation”

Runtime: 59 minutes, according to Prime Video.

Pine travels to Colombia under the Matthew Ellis identity to enter Teddy’s operation and investigate the Cartagena shipment. The shift from London surveillance to a direct infiltration gives the story momentum, while the new identity turns the central risk into a practical problem: Pine has to be convincing to the people he is trying to investigate. It ranks below the episodes where that risk produces more substantial revelations or reversals.

6. Episode 1 — “Goodwin’s quiet life is disturbed”

Runtime: 1 hour 4 minutes, according to Prime Video.

Nine years after Pine’s confrontation with Roper, he is living as MI6 officer Alex Goodwin. Seeing an old Roper mercenary in London disrupts the safety of that constructed life and draws him back toward danger. As an opener, it establishes the premise and the vulnerability beneath Pine’s new identity; its job is to set the season in motion rather than deliver the later Colombia conspiracy’s revelations. It ranks last here for its role as setup, not because a longer runtime or a quieter start makes it inherently weaker.

What the ranking says about the season’s arc

The order follows a progression: episode 1 unsettles Pine’s new life, episode 2 puts him inside Teddy’s operation, and episode 3 connects the shipment to covert British interests. Episode 4 makes the coup evidence and the breakdown of Teddy’s trust collide; episode 5 turns exposure into a tactical crisis; episode 6 brings Pine and Teddy into a temporary alliance against Hanson. That structure is why the middle-to-late episodes place highest: they combine personal risk with clearer consequences for the conspiracy.

Release and story context

John le Carré Ltd. describes season 2 as an expansion beyond the source material of The Night Manager, rather than an adaptation of another le Carré novel. Its adaptation page lists BBC release on 1 January 2026 and Prime Video release on 11 January 2026. Amazon specifies the territorial split: BBC and BBC iPlayer in the UK, with Prime Video worldwide excluding the UK. See John le Carré Ltd.’s adaptation page and Amazon’s Prime Video listing.

The sources describe the gap after the first season differently: Prime Video’s episode catalog says nine years have passed since Pine tricked Roper, while the rights-holder synopsis describes the season as arriving eight years after the finale. Those are the sources’ respective descriptions; they do not establish one exact in-story interval.

The listed cast includes Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman, Diego Calva, Camila Morrone, Noah Jupe, Indira Varma, Paul Chahidi, Hayley Squires, Alistair Petrie, Douglas Hodge, and Michael Nardone. Amazon’s listing also includes Hugh Laurie. John le Carré Ltd. says David Farr created and executive produced the season and Georgi Banks-Davies directed all six episodes.
