Grace Van Patten and Jackson White began dating around the audition period for Tell Me Lies, before the series premiered in September 2022. They kept the relationship quiet at first, then spoke publicly about dating and working together. Their real-life relationship is separate from the troubled romance their characters, Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco, portray on the show.
When did Grace Van Patten and Jackson White start dating?
Published timeline reporting places the start of their relationship during the Tell Me Lies audition process, before the show’s first season premiered. In January 2024, co-star Katey Sagal said publicly that Van Patten and White had been together for two years. Teen Vogue also reports that Van Patten first encountered White at a birthday party in 2016, before they later auditioned for the series together. That earlier meeting is not the reported start of their relationship. Teen Vogue’s relationship timeline recounts the chronology.
How did they meet?
Van Patten and White first crossed paths at a birthday party in 2016, according to Teen Vogue. They later met again through the audition process for Tell Me Lies, which is when published accounts place the beginning of their romance. The series cast them as Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco, fictional romantic partners.
Why did they keep the relationship quiet?
As the show approached its September 2022 premiere, the pair tried to keep their relationship private. Teen Vogue describes them as playful in early interviews while speculation about their connection grew. They later became more open about dating, including during promotion for the second season in 2024.

What have they said about dating and working together?
During season-two promotion, Van Patten and White discussed being a couple while working together. Teen Vogue recounts their August 2024 appearance on Good Morning America and their comments about filming as a couple. In a separate comment to People in August 2025, Van Patten described their relationship as “very grounded and easy” and said they understood each other. Yahoo repeated the comment in January 2026; it should be read as a statement made in 2025, not as a new 2026 update. Yahoo’s recap preserves that context.
In a joint Teen Vogue cover story published January 28, 2026, the pair discussed their relationship and life around their work schedules. The article reported that their similar schedules helped them integrate their lives without moving in together. Read the Teen Vogue interview.

Are Grace Van Patten and Jackson White still together?
Public coverage in 2026 continued to describe Van Patten and White as a real-life couple. Vanity Fair reported in January that they had been cast together in Calvin Klein’s Valentine’s Day campaign while filming the third season of Tell Me Lies. On September 9, 2026, an official Drew Barrymore Show page said White discussed how he and Van Patten decided to get together. The page confirms that the topic came up, but does not provide a transcript or a detailed new account of their relationship. These public appearances and reports do not establish every detail of their private status as of October 2026. The show’s official episode page identifies the discussion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How is their real relationship different from Lucy and Stephen’s?
Van Patten and White’s real relationship should not be inferred from the volatile romance between Lucy and Stephen. The characters’ relationship is fictional and deliberately fraught; the Associated Press described it as unhealthy in a September 2024 report about the series. Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer said young-adult relationships deserve serious treatment: “This age is so important, and I think most people when they write about YA, they don’t take it seriously.” That comment concerns the show’s portrayal of young people, not the actors’ private relationship. The Associated Press report discusses the series’ approach.
