Jennette’s memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, and her interviews are the main public sources for their relationship: McCurdy describes a childhood shaped by her mother’s ambitions for her acting career and by control over parts of her private life. Those accounts are Jennette’s recollections, not independently adjudicated findings about Debra.

The fullest first-person account is Jennette’s 2022 memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died. Simon & Schuster describes the book as a memoir about her experience as a child actor, eating disorders, addiction, and her complicated relationship with her mother. The publisher lists the trade paperback as 320 pages, ISBN 9781982185831, and reports more than 3 million copies sold; that sales figure is publisher-reported, not an independently verified audit. What did Jennette McCurdy say about her mother?
McCurdy has described Debra as strongly directing her acting career and micromanaging aspects of her life. In her memoir and interviews, she recounts pressure around food and maintaining a small body for child roles, limited privacy, and intimate bathing and body checks that her mother reportedly described as cancer checks. The publisher’s synopsis also says McCurdy was showered by her mother until age sixteen.
#1 Best Overall
These are sensitive claims presented through McCurdy’s memoir and her accounts in interviews. They should be understood as her recollections; the cited reporting does not independently establish or adjudicate private family events. The Guardian interview and Vogue interview discuss her account and how she later reflected on it.
How did Jennette describe her mother’s death and her own grief?
McCurdy has said Debra died of breast cancer in 2013, when Jennette was 21. Her feelings after the death were not simple or fixed. The Guardian reported that McCurdy initially felt she had no identity without her mother, but later came to understand that feeling as connected to conditioning. In the same interview, she said, “I genuinely felt I had no identity without my mom.” The statement describes her feelings at the time, not a complete account of the relationship or her later perspective.
Rank #2
McCurdy has also discussed anger, compassion, grief, and eventual relief as part of a complicated emotional process. In a 2022 Vogue interview, she affirmed the memoir’s title and described the book as exploring the nuance behind it. The title alone should not be taken as a summary of all her feelings about her mother.
Why is I’m Glad My Mom Died central to Debra’s story?
The memoir, published in August 2022, is the central source for Jennette McCurdy’s account of growing up with Debra. It is a first-person memoir, not a neutral biography of Debra. Interviews about the book offer McCurdy’s later explanations and reflections, while publisher copy provides a brief synopsis and publication details. The Associated Press reported on the book’s publication; TIME also covered the memoir in 2022: TIME’s coverage.

Is there a screen adaptation of the memoir?
On July 1, 2025, the Associated Press reported Apple’s announcement of a 10-episode dramedy inspired by the memoir, with Jennifer Aniston attached and McCurdy and Ari Katcher as co-showrunners. That report documents an announcement; it does not establish a release date, later production progress, or current availability. Read the AP announcement report.
