What tiara did Meghan Markle wear on her wedding day?
Meghan wore Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara. In its 19 May 2018 wedding announcement, the Royal Household said the veil was held in place by the bandeau, “lent to Ms. Markle by The Queen.” The notice is the clearest official source for the tiara’s identity and loan.
What is Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau?
The Royal Household describes it as an English bandeau made in 1932 from diamonds and platinum. Its flexible band consists of eleven sections pierced with interlaced ovals and set with large and small brilliant diamonds. A detachable central brooch contains ten brilliant diamonds.
The brooch’s earlier history
The central brooch was given to the then Princess Mary in 1893 by the County of Lincoln as a wedding gift when she married Prince George, Duke of York. Queen Mary later bequeathed both the bandeau and the brooch to Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, according to the Royal Household notice.

Did Meghan Markle want to wear a different tiara?
Later accounts have reported that Meghan preferred an emerald tiara, but the claim remains attributed reporting rather than an established fact. A 2026 Vanity Fair article says she preferred an emerald option and that its provenance was questioned, while also reporting that she was happy with Queen Mary’s bandeau. That account draws in part on an unnamed palace source; it is not a direct statement from Meghan or the Queen.
The Knot’s account discusses reports of an emerald as Meghan’s initial preference and cites both Prince Harry’s memoir Spare and the authors of Finding Freedom. It notes that Harry did not confirm the specific emerald-tiara claim in his memoir. The Royal Household’s announcement identifies the tiara Meghan wore, but says nothing about private discussions over other options.

What was the disagreement about the tiara?
Accounts of a dispute concern access to the bandeau after it had been selected, not proof that Meghan wanted a different piece. The Knot reports that the couple were offered options and describes later tension over arranging for the chosen tiara to be tried with Meghan’s hairdresser. In Harry’s account, after a delay, Angela Kelly said the tiara could not leave the palace without an orderly and police escort. That is Harry’s attributed version, not an official finding.
A 26 May 2026 Daily Beast report relays royal biographer Robert Hardman’s recollections about the selection process, transport, provenance checks and a later request to use the tiara at a hair rehearsal. These are interview-based recollections, not an official account. The article says Buckingham Palace was contacted for comment and a Sussexes’ representative declined.
