Eunice was the sister of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Edward “Ted” Kennedy, making Maria their niece. Her father was Robert “Sargent” Shriver; Maria grew up with four brothers and later had four children with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
How Maria Shriver is related to the Kennedys
The family connection runs through Maria’s maternal line: Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Kennedy were her maternal grandparents, and their daughter Eunice was Maria’s mother. Eunice was a sister of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Edward Kennedy. Maria is therefore the niece of the three brothers and the granddaughter of Joseph and Rose Kennedy. The National Park Service identifies Eunice’s brothers, while Special Olympics captions identify Joseph and Rose as her parents: National Park Service biography of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Special Olympics family page.
So, Maria is part of the Kennedy family by birth through her mother, but her surname is Shriver, inherited from her father. The California Governor’s Library biography names Robert “Sargent” Shriver and Eunice Kennedy Shriver as her parents: California Governor’s Library biography of Maria Shriver.
Maria’s parents and siblings
Eunice and Sargent Shriver had five children: Robert, Maria, Timothy, Mark and Anthony. Maria was the only daughter and had four brothers. The National Park Service lists the children, and the California Governor’s Library biography describes Maria’s family: National Park Service biography of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and California Governor’s Library biography of Maria Shriver.

Why Eunice’s family is connected to Special Olympics
Eunice’s sister Rosemary had an intellectual disability. Their relationship helped inspire Eunice’s work to foster acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities, a legacy closely associated with Special Olympics. In her opening remarks at the 1968 Chicago Special Olympics, Eunice said: “The Chicago Special Olympics prove a very fundamental fact. That exceptional children … can be exceptional athletes, the fact that through sports they can realize their potential for growth.” The excerpt, including its ellipsis, is reproduced by the National Park Service.
