Spoilers for Alien: Earth Season 1, Episode 8, “The Real Monsters.”
“The Real Monsters” ends with Wendy and the Lost Boys taking control of Neverland and imprisoning the adults who controlled them. It is a potent reversal of the season’s captor-and-captive dynamic—and a deliberately uneasy victory. The finale’s strongest idea is that human exploitation can be as monstrous as the creatures humans fear. Its weakest point is that the takeover can feel too easy to fully earn.
What happens in “The Real Monsters”
In the season finale, Wendy uses her access to Neverland’s systems to free herself and the Lost Boys. They capture the adults who have controlled or harmed them, and Wendy rescues her brother Joe. The closing tableau places those adults in captivity, with Wendy and the Xenomorphs now the force behind the new order.
Curly asks, “What do we do now?” Wendy’s answer—“Now we rule”—is the episode’s final line and its defining turn. The FX episode transcript confirms the exchange and identifies the episode as the Season 1 finale.

Why the role reversal matters
Who are the “real monsters”?
The title invites a question rather than supplying a simple answer. In Matt Goldberg’s Decoding TV review, the adults’ treatment of the hybrids—as experiments, possessions, or problems to manage—helps create the conditions for revolt. That is an interpretation of the episode, not an official verdict. It shifts the horror beyond the Xenomorphs without pretending they are harmless.
The season’s conflict also implicates corporate power. The Ringer’s finale analysis describes the series’ attention to Prodigy and Weyland-Yutani alongside its alien threats. The result is a franchise horror story in which institutions that capture and exploit life can be frightening in their own right.

Liberation, revenge, and the question of rule
The hybrids’ victory is emancipation from people who treated them as property or subjects of control. But Wendy’s declaration does not say what comes next, or whether the new rulers will behave differently from the people they have displaced. The ending gains force from that uncertainty: the takeover is a victory, but not a moral resolution.
Wendy’s future is also emotionally complicated. Joe is with the group, but their relationship remains strained. TIME’s finale explainer notes Wendy’s admission, “I don’t know what I am,” and her rejection of familiar labels. Her bond with the Xenomorphs and distance from her former human life make the closing image more unsettling than triumphant.

Does the finale earn its takeover?
The reviews differ on whether the finale’s thematic ambition is matched by its execution. Goldberg finds the central idea compelling: the hybrids’ revolt grows out of human cruelty, and the story avoids reducing the conflict to another straightforward survival contest between humans and Xenomorphs. The Ringer, while recognizing the series’ distinctive ideas and striking production design, finds the final stretch rushed and the takeover too easily accomplished, pointing to limited resistance from Prodigy’s security and leadership.
That criticism matters because the speed of the reversal affects suspense as well as plausibility. A sudden, nearly uncontested victory can make Wendy’s new power feel alarming; it can also leave the audience wanting a harder-won payoff. The finale’s abruptness works best as a shock image and less well as a fully developed account of how the old order falls.

A cliffhanger, not a clean ending
Wendy’s last line opens the next question—what the hybrids will do with power—rather than resolving the season’s conflicts. On the official FX podcast, creator Noah Hawley said, “Well, I’m trying to get a second season,” explaining that a too-neat ending could make the story feel like a miniseries. That is his stated creative rationale when recorded, not confirmation of the show’s current renewal status.
Hawley also cautioned against assuming the familiar alien hierarchy would determine the story: “You go into it thinking of course, it’s a show about Xenomorphs taking over the earth, but that’s not necessarily the hierarchy that’s going to emerge.” The finale makes good on that premise by putting Wendy’s claim to rule, rather than a simple alien invasion, at the center of its final image.

Verdict
“The Real Monsters” is strongest when it turns the series’ horror back on the humans and institutions that made the hybrids captive. Wendy’s rise gives the finale a memorable, morally unsettled ending, and her bond with Joe keeps the victory personal as well as political. The weakness is the ease of the takeover: the idea lands more decisively than the plot mechanics that deliver it. As a season-ending provocation, though, “Now we rule” leaves the right question hanging over Neverland: what will Wendy do with the power she has taken?
