Aaron Carter’s immediate cause of death was drowning, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The report says the drowning was due to the effects of difluoroethane and alprazolam and classifies the manner of death as accidental.
What the medical examiner determined
The report lists “(A) Drowning” as the immediate cause and “(B) Effects of difluoroethane and alprazolam” as the condition leading to it. The manner-of-death field is marked “ACCIDENT.” Its injury description says Carter was “Submerged in bathtub after inhalation of compressed gas and intake of alprazolam.”

What happened
Carter died on November 5, 2022, at age 34. The Los Angeles Times reported that his housekeeper found him unresponsive in the bathtub, called 911, and performed CPR; paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. How to understand the cause and manner
- Immediate cause: drowning.
- Other effects named in the causal chain: difluoroethane and alprazolam.
- Manner of death: accident, as determined by the medical examiner.
These terms describe different parts of the finding. The report does not identify either substance alone as the immediate cause; it names drowning as the immediate cause and the effects of both substances in the causal chain.

In its April 19, 2023, coverage, the Los Angeles Times reported that Carter’s former fiancée and former publicists questioned aspects of the report. His former publicists asked why two people they said had been at the home had not been identified or investigated. Those were concerns voiced by former representatives, not a separate official finding: the medical examiner’s report classifies the death as accidental.
