Aaron Rodgers said he chose to keep playing football rather than retire to become Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s running mate. He acknowledged the possibility publicly on May 21, 2024, then clarified three days later that he had never been weighing a campaign alongside his quarterback career.
Did Aaron Rodgers really consider being RFK Jr.’s vice president?
Yes. Rodgers said Kennedy asked him to consider becoming his running mate. In an interview with Tucker Carlson published the week before Rodgers spoke to reporters, he recalled answering: “Are you serious? I’m a [expletive] football player.” As The Washington Post reported, Rodgers said he thought about the possibility because he cared about Kennedy and wanted to hear what he had to say. The newspaper’s account is the source for these interview details.
What did Rodgers say about keeping playing?
On May 21, 2024, at the New York Jets’ facility, Rodgers told reporters that he and Kennedy had “a couple of really nice conversations.” He described the choice this way: “There were really two options: It was retire and be his VP or keep playing — and I want to keep playing.” The Washington Post called this his closest confirmation yet that Kennedy had offered him the running-mate opportunity.
What did Rodgers clarify three days later?
On May 24, Rodgers gave a further account in an interview with Adam Schein of SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio, as reported by NBC Sports. He said he was on Kennedy’s short list, but that football had been his only option in his mind since September 12, 2023. “It was never like playing quarterback and also campaigning at the same time,” he said. He added: “In the end, I was always playing.”

The May 24 comments narrow the impression created by his May 21 “two options” description. Rodgers said he listened to Kennedy because he respected him and appreciated their friendship; he did not describe himself as considering a combined football-and-campaign schedule. The two accounts are best read in sequence: he acknowledged the retirement-or-running-mate possibility on May 21, then explained on May 24 that his focus had remained on football.
Who did RFK Jr. choose as his running mate?
Kennedy announced Nicole Shanahan as his running mate on March 26, 2024. Rodgers was a reported possibility, not the candidate Kennedy ultimately selected. Axios reported that Rodgers had been among the names on Kennedy’s earlier shortlist.

Why was the running-mate search happening in March?
In March, Kennedy said Rodgers and former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura were among the leading possibilities for his independent campaign’s running mate, according to Associated Press reporting. The AP also noted that ballot-access rules varied by state and that some states required independent candidates to name a vice-presidential nominee before beginning ballot-access efforts. That was general campaign context; it does not establish why Kennedy approached Rodgers.
