The available credits support that outline, but do not establish an objective “best director” ranking or a complete career biography. Here is what can be said with confidence—and where the record remains incomplete.
What is Megumi Ishitani known for in One Piece?
Ishitani’s visibility among One Piece viewers comes chiefly from a small group of highly discussed works within a television series that has run for decades. Toei Animation dates the anime’s Japanese broadcast debut to October 20, 1999, and still lists the series as ongoing on its official series page.

A secondary staff-credit reference attributes episodes 957, 982 and 1015 to Ishitani as director, and also credits her with directing One Piece Fan Letter. Those episode credits should be checked against the episodes’ own end credits or a primary production record; the database is a useful lead, not an official Toei credit source. The credits do not, by themselves, establish that every visual or animation choice in an episode was solely hers.
Which One Piece episodes did she direct?
The episodes most often associated with Ishitani in the available staff-credit record are:
#1 Best Overall
- Episode 957
- Episode 982
- Episode 1015
These credits offer a concrete starting point for exploring her One Piece work, rather than proof of a formal ranking. Calling the episodes “the best” is a matter of fan judgment: the available sources establish neither a consensus list nor reliable audience-rating statistics that would make it an objective distinction.
A careful comparison should look at each episode’s adapted story material, point of view and staging, and—where verified—storyboarding, transitions, sound and music. It should also account for the contributions of other credited staff. Directing is one part of a collaborative production, so it is not sound to attribute every striking frame or animation decision to Ishitani alone.
Rank #2
What is One Piece Fan Letter?
One Piece Fan Letter is a 2024 television special. Toei Animation USA’s official catalog lists it as a 30-minute special. The secondary staff-credit reference names Ishitani as its director; Toei’s catalog independently confirms the special’s year and format.
Toei’s 2025 investor presentation reports that the special was available on streaming platforms in Japan and overseas, and that its Blu-ray launched on July 30, 2025. The presentation does not name services or confirm current availability in any particular country, so those statements are not enough to identify a streaming platform or a region-specific edition for an individual viewer. See Toei’s Film Business: Topics presentation for the release information.

What is known about Ishitani’s career and directing style?
The credits above support a focused account of Ishitani’s One Piece work, but not a reliable full biography. The sources available here do not establish her birthplace, birth date, education, broader employment history or awards. Nor do they provide a verified first-person interview or other primary account of her creative process.
For the same reason, it would be premature to describe a definitive “signature method” or explain the episodes’ reception with unsourced anecdotes, ratings or view counts. Claims about her background or approach need dependable biographical records or direct, verifiable interviews; enthusiasm for the episodes is not a substitute for that evidence.
