They are related by the idea of a flexible energy weapon, but the available official descriptions do not establish that they are the same design.
What is the history of the lightwhip in Star Wars?
The lightwhip is best understood through two continuity threads rather than one uninterrupted history. In the older Expanded Universe, now labeled Legends, it is associated with Lumiya and Marvel’s Star Wars comics. In current canon, Vernestra Rwoh’s purple lightsaber has a whip-saber function, as described by the official Star Wars Databank.
Lucasfilm drew the continuity distinction in its April 25, 2014 announcement: “Demand for past tales of the Expanded Universe will keep them in print, presented under the new Legends banner.” The announcement said that future storytelling would proceed under a new, connected approach. The older stories remain part of Star Wars publishing history, but they should not automatically be treated as current-canon events.
Lumiya and the Legends comic tradition
Lumiya is the central name in the older lightwhip association. A secondary reference history connects her to lightwhips in the Legends-era Marvel comics. Marvel’s catalog offers a focused point of entry: Star Wars (1977) #95, whose synopsis presents Lumiya against Luke Skywalker. The catalog confirms the issue and its story premise; it does not, by itself, establish that this is Lumiya’s first appearance or the first time she uses a lightwhip.

Vernestra Rwoh’s current-canon whip-saber
The current-canon screen account is more specific about the weapon’s relationship to an ordinary lightsaber. The Star Wars Databank entry for Vernestra Rwoh describes her purple lightsaber as able to unfurl into a “whip saber” function or remain a standard shaft of light. It lists The Acolyte as the weapon’s appearance.
That wording matters: Vernestra’s weapon is described as a lightsaber with an alternate whip-like function, not as proof that every Star Wars lightwhip has the same construction. A High Republic-era reference point also appears in The High Republic: A Test of Courage; Disney Books confirms the novel and its author, Justina Ireland, in its official catalog. The catalog identifies the book, but does not establish the details of a particular lightwhip scene.

How the two portrayals differ
| Continuity | Wielder | Medium | Relationship to a lightsaber |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legends | Lumiya | Older Marvel comics and related reference history | Associated with separate Legends lightwhip lore; the available sources do not establish its specifications here. |
| Current canon | Vernestra Rwoh | The Acolyte; identified in the Star Wars Databank | A purple lightsaber that can unfurl into a whip-saber function or remain a standard blade. |
The distinction prevents a common continuity mix-up: details attached to Lumiya’s Legends weapon should not be transferred to Vernestra’s canon lightsaber without a current-canon source. The official Databank account does not give a general engineering specification for all lightwhips.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat the sources establish about lightwhip mechanics
Star Wars’ general lightsaber reference describes a kyber-powered energy weapon used to cut and to deflect or reflect blaster bolts with the Force. That is background on ordinary lightsabers, not a technical account of every lightwhip or of Vernestra’s whip mode. Claims about a particular weapon’s reach, control, flexible strands, or construction require support from the relevant continuity’s story or reference material; they should not be presented as universal rules.

For the same reason, there is no reliable single specification to apply across the two portrayals. The official material cited here establishes the continuity framing, Lumiya’s comic connection, and the Databank’s description of Vernestra’s weapon—not that the weapons share a design.
