Ralph Ineson played the Green Knight in David Lowery’s The Green Knight (2021), shaping the mysterious figure as both an imposing threat and a playful tester of Sir Gawain. In an August 4, 2021 interview with Germain Lussier for io9, Ineson discussed the role’s prosthetic makeup, his smaller appearances across major franchises, and the way genre stories bring audiences together.
How Ralph Ineson became the Green Knight
Ineson said director David Lowery wanted him for the title role and offered it to him after sending the script. The part drew on the actor’s childhood affection for Arthurian lore, but the performance was not simply about appearing fearsome.

Ineson described the Green Knight as a figure who tests men. The character’s size and unsettling look were already built into the design, so Ineson wanted to give him a more mischievous quality: “the way he challenges more with a smile and a bit of a taunt.” That mix of menace and play makes the challenge to Gawain feel like more than a blunt display of strength.
The film draws on the medieval poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Readers interested in the source can choose between modern-language translations and editions that retain the Middle English; the right fit depends on whether readability or the original text is the priority.

What the Green Knight’s prosthetic makeup involved
Ineson recalled that applying the prosthetics took three and a half hours after the team had reduced the process, while removal took about an hour. He credited prosthetic designer Barrie Gower and makeup artist Jess Brooks. These are Ineson’s recollections in the 2021 interview, rather than independently documented production timings.
He said the makeup was demanding but manageable because the character appeared in relatively few scenes and required a limited number of filming days. The lengthy application did not put him off accepting the role.

Why Ineson calls many of his franchise roles small parts
Ineson has appeared in major fantasy and science-fiction productions, but he cautioned against treating every credit as a leading role. As he put it, “I feel slightly guilty claiming the credit for all these huge franchises as if I played Han Solo and Star-Lord.” He attributed the opportunity for British actors to take brief roles in part to the number of large productions made in the UK.
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Ineson described his part as small and said he was happy to take it. Being on set with Stormtroopers also had a particular resonance for someone who had grown up with the films.
- The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance: He recorded the Hunter as voice work. In the interview, he recalled that one recording choice left his throat sore.
Those examples illustrate why role format and size matter when describing a career: an on-screen appearance and a voice performance are both franchise credits, but neither necessarily means a central character.

Secrecy, other projects, and franchise audiences
Ineson said production secrecy had become stricter over the course of his career. Discussing a Lucasfilm/Disney production he was working on at the time, he recalled security measures and briefings but did not identify the project. The 2021 interview therefore does not establish which production it was.
He also said he had auditioned for a Doctor Who episode years earlier without being called back, while expressing interest in appearing on the series. At the time of the interview, he was filming a small part in Robert Eggers’s The Northman; those comments describe his plans in 2021, not a current project update.

On the appeal of the big franchises, Ineson reflected on how widely they travel: “It’s amazing, just the worldwide power of these franchises now to bring people together and inspire them, constantly.” That audience connection was part of the pleasure he described in taking even a small role.

Ineson praised Dev Patel’s presence and preparation in The Green Knight. He said the actors moved into their scenes without much time to socialize beforehand, a working rhythm that kept attention on the performances rather than on extended off-camera familiarity.
