Ultron began as Hank Pym’s creation and became one of the Avengers’ recurring threats. His comic history ranges from the early Avengers stories and the creation of other artificial beings to a devastating attack on Slorenia, a cosmic conflict with the Phalanx, and the 2013 Age of Ultron event. The clearest way to follow it is as a set of major turns—not one uninterrupted story.

Who created Ultron in the comics?

Hank Pym created Ultron. Marvel’s official reading guide frames the central conflict as the consequence of Pym’s creation becoming an independent danger, and lists the early Avengers issues that establish Ultron’s place in the team’s history. Later stories expand that premise: Ultron’s changing forms and relationships with other artificial beings make him more than a single robot returning for another fight.

What was Ultron’s first appearance?

Marvel’s key-issue guide begins with Avengers (1963) #54 and #55, which are best read together as Ultron’s introduction and creation-era foundation. The guide does not resolve the precise distinction between a first cameo and a first full appearance; consult the original issues if that panel-level distinction matters to you. Marvel’s Ultron reading list is a practical starting point, but its issue blurbs are summaries rather than substitutes for the comics.

What are the best Ultron comics to read?

This selective route follows the major stages Marvel highlights. It is a reader-friendly path, not a claim that every issue is essential or that the stories form a perfectly seamless chronology.

Reading choice What it adds Best for
Avengers (1963) #54–55 Ultron’s introduction and creation-era foundation. Starting with the classic Avengers context.
Avengers (1963) #66 and #161 Further early developments; Marvel associates #66 with adamantium and #161 with Jocasta. Following the character’s early evolution and connections.
Avengers (1998) #0 and #19–22 A major return involving Slorenia and Ultron’s human “family.” A destructive Avengers-era conflict and its character stakes.
Annihilation: Conquest Ultron’s role in a wider cosmic conflict with the Phalanx. Seeing the character beyond an Avengers-only setting.
Age of Ultron (2013) #1–10 A ten-part event centered on Ultron’s threat to organic life and Earth. A large-scale Marvel event; add Avengers A.I. (2013) #1 for an AI-focused continuation.

The classic foundation: Avengers #54–55, #66 and #161

Start with #54–55, then sample #66 and #161 to see how the early stories develop Ultron’s place in Avengers history. Marvel identifies #66 with the adamantium development and #161 with Jocasta, but issue summaries alone are not a basis for more detailed scene-by-scene claims. Reading the comics themselves gives the full context.

The Avengers catastrophe: #0 and #19–22

In Avengers (1998) #0 and #19–22, Ultron’s conflict reaches Slorenia and involves his human “family.” Marvel’s editorial account describes the attack as ruinous, making this stretch a useful choice for readers interested in the consequences of Ultron’s ties to Hank Pym, Vision, and Alkhema. The issues sit within the larger collection Avengers Assemble Vol. 2, which collects Avengers #12–22, #0, and Annual 1999. It is a broader collected route, not a volume limited to the Ultron story.

The cosmic turn: Annihilation: Conquest

Ultron also enters a conflict beyond Earth’s usual Avengers setting through Annihilation: Conquest, where Marvel’s official descriptions place him in the Phalanx story. The collected hardcover gathers the event and several tie-ins, so it suits readers who want the wider cosmic narrative rather than only Ultron’s part in it. See Marvel’s Annihilation: Conquest hardcover listing for the collection details.

The 2013 event and AI aftermath

Age of Ultron (2013) is a ten-part event about Ultron threatening organic life and Earth. It is a major event, not a complete account of every Ultron incarnation or story. Marvel’s reading guide also points to Avengers A.I. (2013) #1, which moves attention to the continuing AI aftermath and legacy. Together, these are a useful later-era branch rather than a replacement for the character’s earlier Avengers history.

What is the difference between Ultron’s comic history and Age of Ultron?

Age of Ultron is one event in a much longer comic history. It focuses on a particular large-scale crisis, while Ultron’s broader story includes his creation by Pym, recurring clashes with the Avengers, links to other artificial beings, changing forms, and a role in a cosmic conflict. Reading the event alone gives you that event’s premise; it does not cover all the turns that made Ultron a recurring character.

How to make sense of Ultron’s changing history

Think of Ultron’s comics as recurring consequences rather than a single origin-to-finale arc. Pym’s creation becomes an independent threat; later stories return to the Avengers and explore other artificial beings, altered forms, and wider ambitions. The order above is a publication-oriented selection based on Marvel’s key-issue guide, not a definitive in-universe chronology. For issue-level plot detail, the comics themselves remain the best source.
