Disney stories often remove a protagonist’s parents because the loss forces a young character to face danger, make consequential choices and build a new sense of family. It is a recurring storytelling device, not a universal rule—and the available evidence does not show that Walt Disney’s mother’s death was its single cause.
What the parent-loss trope does in a story
It gives a young character immediate stakes
A parent’s death can leave a child without the protection and guidance ordinarily supplied by adults. The loss creates an urgent problem: survive, find belonging, protect someone else or discover who you are. That is a compact way to turn childhood into visible action.
It makes room for other relationships
Once a parent is absent, friends, siblings, mentors, a surviving parent or an adoptive caregiver can become central. The emotional arc shifts from a conventional household toward chosen or substitute family. Disney’s official Bambi page frames the film around friendship and family; in Onward, the brothers’ quest is also the story’s central bond.
It can introduce mortality without leaving a fantasy setting
Loss gives a fantastical story a serious emotional danger. In PBS’s account of Bambi, the film’s mother-death scene is described as fearless filmmaking; animator Don Hahn recalled its lasting impact: “A generation was and still is traumatized by that moment in Bambi.”

Why Bambi is the touchstone
PBS describes Bambi as based on a novel about a young deer growing toward adulthood. During the film, Bambi’s mother is killed by a hunter, but his father survives. The Great Prince tells him, “Your mother can’t be with you anymore. Come, my son.” The moment makes grief part of Bambi’s coming of age, while his father and the forest community help carry the story forward.
Bambi is a memorable example, not proof of a single studio formula. Disney and Pixar stories use different kinds of loss for different dramatic purposes.

How the losses differ across Disney stories
| Film | Parent-loss mechanism | Story function |
|---|---|---|
| Bambi | His mother is killed by a hunter; his father remains. | Connects grief and maturation to nature’s danger and a continuing father-son bond. |
| Frozen | Anna and Elsa’s parents die in a shipwreck. | Leaves the sisters to face isolation and responsibility, and centers their relationship. |
| Tarzan | Tarzan’s human parents are killed by a predator. | Leads to his adoption into a nonhuman family and a conflict over identity. |
| Finding Nemo | Marlin’s mate and their other eggs are lost in a barracuda attack; Nemo survives. | Helps explain Marlin’s protectiveness and gives him a rescue journey. |
| Brother Bear | Kenai’s mother is killed by a hunter. | Connects grief to moral change and learning to see from another perspective. |
| Mulan | A parent figure dies in war, according to a 2026 peer-reviewed survey’s coding. | Places family duty in a story shaped by wartime loss. |
| Onward | The father dies before the story; the brothers are raised by their mother. | Turns the brothers’ relationship and shared quest into the emotional center. |
The cases span hunting, predators, war, a shipwreck and deaths that happen before the story begins. That range suggests a flexible narrative device rather than one fixed reason for every film. It also shows that “orphan” is not always exact: some characters lose one parent, retain another, or grow up with a surviving caregiver.
Did Walt Disney’s mother’s death cause the pattern?
PBS documents that Walt Disney’s mother, Flora, died in 1938 from carbon-monoxide poisoning, and discusses his private response. That is a biographical fact, but the account does not establish that her death caused the recurring loss of parents in Disney films. Nor does the available evidence establish a studio-wide instruction requiring creators to kill off parents.

It is more accurate to treat the trope as a storytelling tool that appears in works with different sources and plots. Bambi, for example, adapted a novel; its parent loss belongs to a broader coming-of-age story, not demonstrably to a single biographical explanation.

The absent parent is often not the story’s only family story. Bambi has his father and the forest community; Anna and Elsa’s bond becomes central after their parents’ deaths; and Onward follows two brothers raised by their mother after their father dies. Director Dan Scanlon connected that film to his own childhood: his father died when Scanlon was one and his brother was three. He said the question behind the film was, “What if you could meet him? What if you could have one day? What would you learn? What would you ask?”

That example shows one way a loss can generate a story about sibling connection and memory, rather than simply serve as a shocking opening. Across these films, the recurring dramatic move is to make a character confront what is missing—and then show the relationships and choices that help them grow.
