Hank Azaria made a new Chief Wiggum video in response to the false 2024 claim that immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating residents’ pets. The Simpsons character hears the rumor as a police complaint, mistakes it for a food reference, and ends by asking, “Are they good?” It is an original social-media performance—not a scene from a Simpsons episode.
What Chief Wiggum says in the video
Azaria performs the Springfield police chief answering a call. TheWrap transcribed the exchange this way:
“Springfield Police, Chief Clancy Wiggum speaking. How can I help you?”
“People are eating dogs? Wait a minute, hot dogs? Oh cats. Mr. Katz is eating hot dogs? No? People are eating dogs and cats. People are eating dogs and cats in Springfield? Are they good?”

The Independent’s transcription differs slightly in wording, including “What, d’you mean like hot dogs?” and “Mr Katz.” Both accounts capture the same joke: Wiggum repeatedly misreads the report as a question about food before treating the alleged animals as something to review. TheWrap’s report and transcription and The Independent’s coverage document the performance.
Why Wiggum is talking about Springfield
On September 10, 2024, Donald Trump made a debate claim that immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating residents’ dogs and cats. The Springfield Police Division was reported to have no information supporting the rumor. Azaria’s video, posted on September 12, turned the claim into a Simpsons joke by moving the news story into the franchise’s fictional Springfield.

The joke works through the gap between the real-world allegation and Wiggum’s hapless response. “Dogs” becomes “hot dogs”; “cats” leads him to “Mr. Katz”; then he appears to consider the animals as food. The punchline is not confirmation of the claim: it is a comic misunderstanding of a rumor that local police reportedly could not substantiate.
How Azaria came up with the bit
In a later interview, Azaria said his social-media representative showed him a Jon Stewart clip about the debate story and suggested a Simpsons connection because it involved Springfield. Azaria described the idea as Chief Wiggum receiving a call about people eating cats and dogs, ending with the question, “Are they good?” The interview provides Azaria’s account of the creative prompt.

Is this an old Simpsons scene?
No. The reported clip is a new performance by Hank Azaria in character as Chief Clancy Wiggum, shared on social media in September 2024. It is not footage from an older episode. The distinction matters because the video borrows the show’s fictional setting and character, but responds to a specific current event.
