The first Rust trailer arrived on March 26, 2025, more than three years after a fatal shooting stopped production. The Western later premiered in Poland in November 2024 and opened in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2025. The delay followed the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set and a series of criminal proceedings involving actor Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed.
What is Rust about?
Rust is a Western directed and written by Joel Souza, based on a story by Souza and Baldwin. Baldwin plays outlaw Harland Rust, who breaks his grandson out of jail after the teenager is sentenced to hang for accidentally killing a rancher.
The published synopses differ on where the story is set: The Guardian describes 1880s Kansas, while ABC’s trailer synopsis places it in 1880s Wyoming. ABC names the grandson as Lucas McCalister, with Josh Hopkins as U.S. Marshal Wood Helm and Travis Fimmel as the bounty hunter known as “Preacher.” The Guardian also names Frances Fisher in the cast.
When did the first trailer come out?
The first trailer was released on March 26, 2025, ahead of the film’s U.S. theatrical opening. It was the first public footage to introduce the completed Western after production had been interrupted in 2021. The trailer’s release date did not mark the film’s premiere: Rust had already screened at the Camerimage festival in Toruń, Poland, in November 2024.

Why was the film delayed?
Production stopped after the October 2021 on-set shooting that killed Hutchins and injured Souza. Work resumed in April 2023, with Hutchins’s husband, Matthew Hutchins, joining the production as an executive producer. His involvement followed a civil settlement reached in October 2022, according to CBS’s timeline.
The long gap between the interruption and the trailer therefore reflects a production halted by the fatal incident, then resumed and completed amid continuing legal proceedings. The film is dedicated to Halyna Hutchins, The Guardian reported. At the Camerimage premiere, Souza said, “We are here because we want to honour her,” adding, “We want to showcase her work. We want it not to just disappear.”

What happened on the Rust set?
On October 21, 2021, a live bullet discharged from a prop gun on the New Mexico set. Hutchins, the film’s cinematographer, was killed, and director Joel Souza was injured. Hulu’s official synopsis and CBS’s timeline report the date and outcome.
The circumstances of the gun’s discharge became part of the criminal proceedings. ABC reported that an FBI forensic report concluded the gun could not have fired without the trigger being pulled; Baldwin’s attorney disputed that account and said the gun was faulty. Those are attributed accounts, not a reason to treat either description as an uncontested finding here.

How did the criminal cases proceed?
The cases had different outcomes. Baldwin’s involuntary-manslaughter charge was dismissed during his July 2024 trial after a dispute over the handling of evidence. Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in March 2024 and sentenced to 18 months. A dismissal during trial is not an acquittal; ABC reported that Baldwin’s charge could not be brought again.
| Date | Reported development |
|---|---|
| October 2021 | Hutchins was killed and Souza injured in the on-set shooting. |
| October 2022 | Matthew Hutchins reached a civil settlement and was to become an executive producer as the production planned to resume, CBS reported. |
| April 2023 | Production resumed. ABC reported that Baldwin’s then-pending charge had been dismissed after prosecutors said further investigation was needed. |
| March 2024 | Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and received an 18-month sentence. |
| July 2024 | Baldwin’s involuntary-manslaughter case was dismissed during trial following an evidence-handling dispute. |
| November 2024 | Rust premiered at Camerimage in Toruń, Poland. |
| January 2025 | The Associated Press reported that Baldwin filed a lawsuit alleging malicious prosecution and civil-rights violations. Those claims were allegations in the filing, not findings by a court. |
| March 26, 2025 | The first trailer was released. |
| May 2, 2025 | The film opened in U.S. theaters. |
The January 2025 report does not establish the later status of Baldwin’s civil lawsuit or the full status of other civil matters. The criminal-case outcomes above should not be read as resolving civil claims.

When and where was Rust released?
The film premiered at Camerimage in Toruń, Poland, in November 2024, then opened in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2025. ABC reported that it was available to rent after its theatrical opening. A 2025 Fast Company report named Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+ and Fandango at Home for digital release, but that dated report does not establish current availability, regional access or whether a title is offered to rent or buy today.
Hulu’s separate documentary Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna examines the investigations and human impact using public court records, behind-the-scenes material and Hutchins’s personal archives, according to Hulu. It is a companion documentary, not the feature film.
