How Connections works
The New York Times Help Center describes Connections as a game in which players receive 16 words and find four groups of four sharing a common connection. It says each puzzle has one solution and is designed to be tricky because words can plausibly fit multiple categories. The categories are color-coded by difficulty, from yellow as easiest to purple as trickiest. See the New York Times Connections help page.

The New York Times Help Center says Connections is free to play on NYT platforms and that new puzzles become available at midnight in each player’s timezone. Its help page says the archive, dating back to June 12, 2023, is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Archived puzzles affect some statistics but not streaks, and a completed archived puzzle cannot be replayed. Access policies can change; check the current Connections help page for the latest details.
