Three-year-old Mariska Hargitay survived the June 29, 1967, crash that killed her mother, actor Jayne Mansfield. After rescuers carried her injured brothers from the wreck, Hargitay remained pinned beneath a passenger seat and was initially overlooked. Her six-year-old brother Zoltan realized she was missing, prompting people to return and find her.
What happened after the crash?
Mansfield was traveling toward a television engagement near New Orleans when the car crashed. Two adults in the front of the car were also killed. Hargitay and her brothers had been in the back seat.
As rescuers took Hargitay’s injured brothers from the scene, she was still trapped beneath the passenger seat with a head injury. TIME reported that Zoltan noticed she was missing and asked where she was. People returned to the wreck and found her.
So “left behind” describes how Hargitay was initially missed during the chaotic rescue. The available accounts do not describe her family deliberately abandoning her.

When and where did Jayne Mansfield die?
Mansfield died in a motor accident near New Orleans on June 29, 1967. The Texas State Historical Association records that she was born Vera Jane Palmer, became a prominent film and television celebrity in the 1950s, and married Mickey Hargitay in 1958. Mariska was one of their three children.
Mansfield was 34 when she died; Hargitay was three. Hargitay later reflected on the age difference and the mother she never had the chance to know: “It’s weird to have maternal feelings for your mother, your dead mother. But she was only 34 when she died.” She also said, “I just wish I could’ve been friends with her.” Hargitay spoke at the TIME Women of the Year Leadership Forum on March 10, 2026.
