A receipt and the ring were recovered from his Paris flat. Those facts do not establish that Diana accepted a proposal, intended to marry Dodi, or chose the ring with him. The strongest investigation cited in later reporting concluded that the evidence did not show they selected it together as an engagement ring.
What was Princess Diana’s “Dis-Moi Oui” ring?
“Dis-Moi Oui” means “Tell me Yes.” The name belonged to a Repossi ring line, and reporting on the 1997 inquest says Dodi Fayed purchased a ring from the line in Paris on August 30, the day before the crash that killed him and Diana.
The Guardian reported that a receipt dated August 30 listed an “engagement ring” (“bague de fiançailles”) and a price of £11,600 in 1997. It also reported that CCTV showed Dodi looking at rings at Repossi’s Paris shop. A ring bearing the “Dis-moi Oui” inscription was later recovered from his flat. These details document a purchase and recovery, not an accepted proposal. (The Guardian’s inquest report)
Did Dodi propose to Diana with the ring?
The available evidence does not establish that he did. The ring was at Dodi’s Paris apartment, not with the couple at the crash site, and reporting says Diana had not been given it before they died. The Washington Post’s account of Operation Paget describes conflicting witness versions of the ring’s selection and intended use, including one in which Dodi planned it as a surprise. The proposal scene associated with The Crown is dramatic interpretation, not documentary evidence. The reviewed reporting does not establish an authentic, verbatim proposal conversation.
Did Diana choose the ring?
Accounts conflict. Investigators heard versions suggesting Diana selected the ring with Dodi in Monte Carlo and versions suggesting Dodi intended to surprise her. The Metropolitan Police’s Operation Paget report, as quoted by Vogue, said the evidence did not show that Diana and Dodi selected the “Tell me Yes” ring together as an engagement ring. Its stated conclusion was: “The weight of evidence is that the Princess of Wales was not intending to get engaged or married to Dodi Al Fayed.” (Vogue’s account of the report)

Diana’s friends also denied that she was engaged or considering marriage to Dodi. Vogue quotes Lady Annabel Goldsmith recalling Diana telling her on August 29, 1997: “Annabel, I need marriage like a rash on my face.” That recollection is relevant context, but it does not resolve every detail of what Dodi intended when he bought the ring.
What did the “Dis-Moi Oui” ring look like?
A July 2026 AOL/InStyle account, describing old Repossi advertisements rather than a photograph authenticated as the exact ring Dodi bought, describes the collection design as an emerald-cut central diamond surrounded by four trillion-cut diamonds, set on a domed band with smaller diamonds. Where is the ring now?
The reviewed sources establish that a ring was recovered from Dodi’s Paris flat after the crash, but they do not verify its present location or owner. Later reporting associates it with the Fayed family, which is not confirmation of where it is today.

How to weigh the competing stories
