Diana was born into the aristocratic Spencer family, not the royal family. But the Spencers had longstanding ties to the royal household: her father served two monarchs as equerry, and the family lived near Sandringham before Diana married the Prince of Wales in 1981. Later, she became the mother of Princes William and Harry. Claims that she was related to Hollywood actors refer to distant reported ancestry, not personal relationships.
Who was in Princess Diana’s immediate family?
Diana Frances Spencer was born on 1 July 1961 to John Spencer and Frances Roche, then Viscount and Viscountess Althorp. Her father later inherited the earldom and became the 8th Earl Spencer; her mother was later known as Frances Shand Kydd. Diana was the youngest of their four children.

- Father: John Spencer, later the 8th Earl Spencer.
- Mother: Frances Roche, later Frances Shand Kydd.
- Older sisters: Sarah, born in 1955, and Jane, born in 1957.
- Younger brother: Charles, born in 1964.
- Brother who died in infancy: Biography.com and Royal Central report that a son named John died within hours of his birth in 1960. This detail appears in those secondary accounts, not in the official Royal Family biography.
Diana’s parents married in 1954, separated in 1967 and divorced in 1969. The Royal Family biography says the children remained with their father at Park House after the separation. John Spencer married Raine, Countess of Dartmouth, in 1976.
How was Diana’s family connected to the royal household?
The Spencer family’s connection to the royal household predated Diana’s marriage. Her father served as equerry to George VI from 1950 to 1952 and to Elizabeth II from 1952 to 1954. An equerry assists a member of the royal household; the role placed John Spencer in close working proximity to both monarchs.

- Language: english
- Binding: paperback
Diana grew up with her family at Park House on the Sandringham estate. The Royal Family’s biography describes the Spencers and the royal family as longtime neighbors. In 1975, when John Spencer inherited the earldom, the family moved to Althorp, the Spencer family’s Northamptonshire home.
Being born a Spencer made Diana an aristocrat, but it did not make her a member of the royal family by birth. Her royal status came through marriage: in 1981 she married the Prince of Wales, later King Charles III.

Who were Diana’s children, and what was her title after divorce?
Diana and the Prince of Wales had two sons:
- Prince William, the elder son.
- Prince Henry, widely known as Harry.
The couple agreed to separate in 1992, and their divorce was finalized in August 1996. Afterward, Diana was styled Diana, Princess of Wales, without the style HRH. The official Royal Family biography says she continued to be regarded as a member of the Royal Family.
Was Princess Diana related to Hollywood actors?
A February 2026 Countryfile article reports distant genealogical links between Diana and actors including Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn. It describes Bogart as a seventh cousin. These are reported ancestry claims, not evidence of a close family relationship or personal connection. The available account does not independently establish each claimed degree of relationship through primary family-tree records.

That distinction matters: a distant shared ancestor, even where a relationship is reported, is very different from being part of someone’s immediate family or social circle. Diana’s documented family story is more directly about the Spencers’ long proximity to the royal household and her own later role as mother to William and Harry.

In September 2026, the Associated Press covered the publication of Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, a book by Diana’s brother Charles Spencer. AP reported that the book renewed public discussion of his recollections and disputes involving Diana’s former husband, now King Charles III. Those recollections should be understood as Charles Spencer’s account, not as uncontested documentary fact.
AP also noted that tensions after Diana’s death between the Spencer family and the Palace were dramatized in The Queen and Netflix’s The Crown. Dramatic portrayals are not themselves documentary evidence.
