Lee dies shielding Jessie at the White House, and the film shows the moment through the photographs Jessie takes. Director Alex Garland described that visual handoff as a “baton pass” from an older character to a younger one. He also said the sequence changed in the edit—and that the final photograph draws on the visual language of news and documentary imagery.
What happens to Lee at the White House?
As Jessie tries to photograph the soldiers and the President, she is caught in the line of fire. Lee steps in front of the bullet. Rather than present Lee’s death as a conventional continuous shot, the film shows it through successive still photographs made by Jessie: Lee is standing in one frame, then falling over in the next.
After Lee’s death, Jessie and Joel continue toward the President. Joel asks the soldiers to wait so he can get a quote. The President says, “Don’t let them kill me,” and is killed anyway. The end credits show Jessie’s photograph of the soldiers over the President’s body developing.
Why does Lee’s death unfold through Jessie’s photographs?
In an interview with Germain Lussier for io9/Gizmodo, published April 12, 2024, Garland called the moment “a bit of cinema grammar of a baton pass.” He meant a transfer from an older character to a younger one: Lee’s death leaves Jessie carrying forward the work of witnessing and photographing, though the handoff is made under devastating circumstances.

The form makes that transfer visible. Jessie is not only the person Lee protects; she is also the person whose camera records Lee’s fall. Garland described the effect of “putting still frames within moving frames that are themselves actually still frames, just flickering past us.” The photographs belong to Jessie’s point of view, while the film lets viewers experience their sequence as cinema.
How did the scene change during editing?
Garland said he did not originally write the moment as a series of photographs. His first conception was “a single captured image…one perfect bit of photography.” In the edit, he found more power in the repeated act of photographing and winding the camera, so he chose that version instead. The sequence of stills is therefore an editorial development, not the original screenplay plan Garland described.

What does the final photograph mean?
Garland said Civil War often takes its visual “grammar” from lived experience, news photography, news footage and documentaries. He described the closing image as a trophy-like photograph that “literally actually occurs exactly in the form you see it.” In his account, that familiar, disturbing kind of image delivers a final “hit of reality” as the film ends.
That is Garland’s explanation of the image’s visual effect; it does not mean the fictional events are documentary footage. The ending instead uses a recognizable news-image composition to make the audience confront how a victory photograph can turn a death into a record—and a trophy.
