MegaBots’ U.S. robot Eagle Prime defeated Japan’s Kuratas in the giant-robot duel broadcast on 17 October 2017. It was a staged entertainment event, filmed over several days and released as edited footage—not a continuous live sporting match.
Who won the giant robot fight?
Eagle Prime, built by the U.S. team MegaBots, won against Suidobashi Heavy Industry’s Japanese Kuratas. Guinness World Records records the finish as Eagle Prime flooring Kuratas. Guinness World Records: Largest robots to fight.
The broadcast was presented in three rounds, but the contest was not a standardized league match with a documented scoring system. Its framing as a “fight” describes a staged spectacle, not a conventional sporting bout.
Was the fight real, or staged?
The machines and their pilots were real, and the teams filmed the contest in Japan. But viewers did not see an uninterrupted live match: the robots fought over several days at an undisclosed location, and the footage was captured for later streaming and posting. So “real” needs qualification: this was a physical contest staged for entertainment, but the broadcast was edited rather than a live, continuous sporting event. Guinness describes it as entertainment and a publicity stunt.
How big were the robots?
Guinness World Records lists Kuratas at 4 m (13 ft) tall and Eagle Prime at 4.8 m (16 ft). It gives the robots’ combined mass as 14.5 metric tonnes (16 tons). These are figures for the two machines in the record entry, not a measure of which robot was more capable.

How was Eagle Prime controlled?
IEEE Spectrum reported that Eagle Prime had a two-person crew and 26 degrees of freedom. MegaBots co-founder Gui Cavalcanti described the division of labor: a rear pilot drove the base and legs using monitors and joysticks, while a front pilot—the gunner—controlled torso rotation and the arms.
The robot could be fitted with modular equipment, including grapple arms, a two-barrel cannon, and a reported 40-horsepower chainsaw attachment. Those details describe Eagle Prime, not Kuratas. In an interview with IEEE Spectrum, Cavalcanti also described the gunner’s control modes, including aiming, preset animations, and task-space control for moving the claw through space.

What did the event prove—and what did it not?
The duel demonstrated a dramatic, human-piloted robot spectacle; it did not establish a mature sport, a validated way to compare robot performance, or that this kind of activity is safe. Cavalcanti told IEEE Spectrum that precautions did not make the activity fundamentally safe: “Ultimately, just like racing, monster trucks, and all sorts of professional sports, this is not a fundamentally safe activity.”
There was substantial engineering behind Eagle Prime. In an April 2018 company account, DSTI said its rotary-union technology routed hydraulic fluid and electrical wires through rotating sections, and described later work on a custom hydraulic rotary union for a redesigned arm. DSTI is a commercial supplier, so its account is the company’s description of its role, not an independent assessment of the robot’s performance.
