Adult Swim’s Uzumaki is no longer an upcoming series: the four-episode anime premiered in 2024, and its reception raised a pointed question about whether its striking first episode could be sustained. The adaptation’s black-and-white approach evokes Junji Ito’s manga, but post-release coverage reported a marked change in animation quality after episode one. That makes the series less a clean answer to the so-called “Junji Ito adaptation curse” than a revealing case of ambition and uneven execution.
What is Adult Swim’s Uzumaki anime?
Uzumaki adapts Junji Ito’s manga as a four-episode horror anime. Its story follows Kirie Goshima and Shuichi Saito in Kurouzu-cho, a town where spirals begin appearing in nature, among residents, and on human bodies. Kirie tries to escape as the phenomenon spreads.
Adult Swim announced the Toonami premiere for September 28, 2024, at 12:30 a.m., with new episodes scheduled weekly in Japanese with English subtitles. The series was produced in partnership with Production I.G USA, with Jason DeMarco as executive producer. Adult Swim’s premiere announcement set out those broadcast details.
VIZ described the show as a collaboration between Adult Swim and Production I.G USA and emphasized its black-and-white visual style as a nod to Ito’s manga. Its October 26, 2024 electronic sell-through announcement named Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, Fandango at Home, and Microsoft Store as purchase options at that time. Those were announced storefronts, not a guarantee of current availability in every country.

Did the anime break the Junji Ito adaptation curse?
“Curse” is shorthand for the challenge of translating Ito’s intricate horror art and episodic stories to animation, not a measurable track record established by this series. Uzumaki arrived after years of anticipation with a distinctive monochrome concept that promised to preserve something of the manga’s unsettling linework. The central question is whether the execution holds together across all four episodes.
In an October 9, 2024 report, MeriStation described a sharp perceived drop in animation quality between the first and second episodes. The outlet also discussed explanations it attributed to since-deleted social posts by executive producer Jason DeMarco. That production account is reported by MeriStation; it is not independently verified production documentation. The criticism concerns a perceived shift in quality and should not be mistaken for a representative survey of all viewers. MeriStation’s report on the animation drop provides that post-release context.

So the answer depends on what “break” means. The adaptation did deliver a visually distinctive first episode and a complete four-part story, but the reported inconsistency makes it difficult to call the result an unqualified triumph. It is better approached as an ambitious adaptation whose strongest promise was not, according to that coverage, consistently maintained.
What should manga readers compare?
The manga is the source text and the clearest point of comparison. Readers can watch for how the anime handles Ito’s visual language, compresses a story told through episodes and incidents, and maintains momentum over a short run.

- Black-and-white imagery: VIZ highlighted the monochrome style as an echo of Ito’s manga. Compare the anime’s linework and grotesque forms with the details and page compositions in the book.
- Selection and connection: Notice which manga events the adaptation includes and how it links them into a four-episode narrative. The available listings establish the episode count, but do not settle whether the pacing or selection works better than the manga.
- Consistency: Consider how the animation looks from episode to episode, keeping the reported quality disparity in mind without treating one outlet’s assessment as universal consensus.
If you have not read the manga, you can follow the anime on its own. Reading the source first is useful if your main interest is seeing how Ito’s imagery and episodic structure are translated rather than simply learning the plot.
How many episodes are there, and where can you watch?
The series has four episodes. Apple TV’s U.S. season listing names Hiroshi Nagahama as director and lists episode durations of 23, 28, 30, and 34 minutes. It gives Japanese as the original audio, and lists English audio, English subtitles, and a TV-MA rating. These are details from that U.S. listing; catalog information and availability may vary by territory or change over time. Adult Swim’s original U.S. broadcast announcement specified Japanese audio with English subtitles.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you start with the manga or the anime?
Choose the manga first if your priority is Ito’s original art and the way the story’s incidents accumulate on the page. Choose the anime first if you want to experience its monochrome adaptation without knowing the source. If you already know the manga, watching becomes a comparison of visual interpretation, story selection, pacing, and animation consistency—not simply a test of whether every detail was reproduced.
