Haasan first said he had spoken with affection, then wrote that his words had been misunderstood and praised Kannada’s literary and cultural tradition.
What did Kamal Haasan say about Kannada?
At the Chennai audio launch for Thug Life, Haasan addressed Shivarajkumar as family from another state and said: “Your language was born out of Tamil. So, you are included in that line.” The surrounding remarks expressed affection for Tamil and a sense of cultural kinship. The wording is reported by India Today and The Indian Express.
The sentence itself made a claim about Kannada’s origins. Its setting helps explain Haasan’s stated intent, but does not establish that claim as a linguistic fact.
Why did the remark draw protests and criticism?
Pro-Kannada groups and named political figures interpreted the comment as diminishing Kannada and its history. Their reaction should not be treated as a view shared by every Kannadiga.

The Indian Express and India Today reported the backlash and the responses of the named speakers and groups.
Did Kamal Haasan apologize?
Haasan initially said he had spoken with love and did not intend to offend: “I think what I said was said with a lot of love. Historians have taught me the language’s history…I didn’t mean anything.” He said he would not apologize for something said with that intent.

He later wrote to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), saying the remark had been misunderstood and taken out of context. He described his intention as expressing unity and wrote: “Like Tamil, Kannada has a proud literary and cultural tradition that I have long admired.” The reported letter explains his position and praises Kannada, but the available account does not establish that he issued the unconditional apology critics demanded. The Indian Express reported his initial comments and reproduced the letter.
Was Kannada “born out of Tamil”?
The scholarly source cited here classifies Kannada as a major South Dravidian language within the Dravidian language family. That broad classification does not, by itself, show that Kannada descended from Tamil, and the sources cited here do not support treating “Kannada was born out of Tamil” as an established linguistic conclusion.

Haasan’s exact wording, his explanation of his intent and the linguistic evidence are different things: a statement at a film event is not proof of a language’s history. The cited classification offers broad context, not a detailed account of how Kannada and Tamil developed or are historically related. Language in India provides the broad classification used here.
What did the Karnataka High Court say?
