Sierra McClain, who played 9-1-1 operator Grace Ryder, did not return for 9-1-1: Lone Star season five, the series’ final season. In the season premiere, the show explained Grace’s absence by saying she had left to volunteer with Mercy Ships. That is the character’s story—not a confirmed explanation for McClain’s decision to leave.

Who left 9-1-1: Lone Star?

Sierra McClain played Grace Ryder, an emergency operator and a central member of the Ryder family, during the show’s first four seasons. TVLine reported that McClain did not return for season five, which was the series’ final season. TVLine’s cast-exit report identifies her season-five absence.

What happened to Grace in the final season?

The season-five premiere accounted for Grace’s absence by having her volunteer with Mercy Ships, an organization TVLine describes as faith-based and focused on life-saving surgeries. TV Insider also reported that Grace was volunteering with Mercy Ships while covering Judd Ryder’s drinking and recovery storyline. TV Insider’s January 15, 2025 coverage provides that context.

Does the show explain why Sierra McClain left?

No personal reason for McClain’s departure is established in the cited reporting. The explanation belongs to Grace’s fictional storyline, not to McClain’s real-life decision. Showrunner Rashad Raisani described the writers’ thinking about the character: “The only thing we could think of to justifiably pull Grace away from her family and job was an even greater calling. And the only thing in Grace’s world that could answer that was God.”
