Tanjiro’s story begins when a demon attacks his family in Taisho-era Japan and continues through training, major missions, and the Hashira Training and Infinity Castle arcs. The official sources support that narrative order, but they do not establish a complete calendar-dated timeline or a verified age for Tanjiro at every milestone. The anime’s release years are a separate timeline, not dates in his fictional life.
Tanjiro’s life, in story order
This is an arc-level timeline of the milestones supported by the official series pages and VIZ’s series overview. It follows events in Tanjiro’s life, not the order in which anime adaptations were released.

Hashira Training and Infinity Castle
The official anime index places Hashira Training after Swordsmith Village, followed by the Infinity Castle film. This establishes the adaptation’s arc order; it does not state how much fictional time passes between the events. As of the official index consulted for this article, the site labels an Infinity Castle trilogy as production confirmed. Official series index
What year does Demon Slayer take place?
The series overview places Tanjiro’s story in Taisho-era Japan. The official pages cited here do not establish an exact in-story calendar year for the milestones above, so a specific year should not be inferred from the anime’s premiere or release dates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Story chronology versus anime release order
These years describe when anime adaptations appeared, not when events happened in Tanjiro’s fictional life. The official index lists the following release sequence:
| Anime adaptation | Release year listed by official index |
|---|---|
| Unwavering Resolve | 2019 |
| Mugen Train film | 2020 |
| Mugen Train and Entertainment District arcs | 2021 |
| Swordsmith Village arc | 2023 |
| Hashira Training arc | 2024 |
| Infinity Castle | 2025 |
These are adaptation years as listed by the official series index; they are not dates in the story.

How old is Tanjiro?
The official pages consulted for this arc-level chronology do not provide a verified age for Tanjiro at every milestone, nor a complete dated chronology from his birth through the ending. An exact age-by-event timeline cannot be established from those pages alone, so fan chronology estimates should not be presented as confirmed official figures.
Read the story in context
For the events in their original context, start with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Volume 1, which VIZ lists on its series page. The official Swordsmith Village introduction also states that the manga consists of 23 volumes and has sold over 150 million copies; because that page does not date the sales figure, it should not be treated as a current total.
