2024’s most talked-about “Free the Nipple” fashion moments were largely sheer or illusion outfits—not necessarily statements of activism. Doja Cat’s Grammys gown, varied Met Gala looks, Florence Pugh’s layered Dior dress and Julia Fox’s December gown show how differently the phrase was applied. The cited coverage does not verify a 2024 Beyoncé look for this roundup, so she is not included as an example.
What “Free the Nipple” means in this fashion roundup
“Free the Nipple” can refer to an activist movement challenging the unequal treatment of men and women who appear topless in public. Euronews describes the campaign’s association with filmmaker Lina Esco and her 2012 film, and notes that platform moderation and advertising standards have shaped the debate. That is a movement context, not proof that a celebrity wearing sheer clothing intended to make an activist statement. Euronews’s January 2024 account provides that historical framing.
In fashion coverage, the phrase is also shorthand for sheer garments, visible lingerie, or exposed breasts. “Naked dress” is a label for an outfit’s appearance; it does not necessarily mean the wearer was literally nude. The examples below distinguish transparent fabric, lingerie layers, illusion garments and sculptural designs rather than treating them as interchangeable.
February: Doja Cat’s sheer Grammys gown
At the February 4 Grammy Awards, Doja Cat wore a sheer, low-cut bustier gown. Bustle reported that her tattoos and breasts were visible through the fabric, making this one of the year’s clearest examples of the press using “Free the Nipple” language for a red-carpet look. The coverage describes the outfit; it does not establish an activist intention. Bustle’s February 5 report has the details.

March: Sheer looks at the Oscars after-parties
Sheer styling appeared in a cluster of looks at the Oscars after-parties, rather than in one single defining outfit. W magazine’s March 11 roundup included Charlize Theron in Dior, Kendall Jenner in Maison Margiela, Ice Spice in Dolce & Gabbana and Halle Bailey in Off-White, alongside looks by Paris Jackson, Sabrina Carpenter, Vanessa Hudgens, Victoria Monét and Gabrielle Union. The roundup documents a range of sheer fashion; it does not say that every outfit exposed nipples. W magazine’s recap captures the event cluster.
May: Different interpretations at the Met Gala and its after-parties
The Met Gala coverage brought together several constructions that should not be collapsed into one “naked dress” category. Bustle described Doja Cat in a wet-look white Vetements dress, Emily Ratajkowski in a sheer Versace Haute Couture gown, Rita Ora in a sheer beaded after-party look and Kylie Jenner in pointed cone-bra styling. The differences matter: wet-look fabric, translucent cloth, beading and a sculptural lingerie reference create distinct effects and levels of coverage. Bustle’s May coverage discusses the looks.

June: Kesha’s separate sheer looks
E! reported that Kesha wore a sheer Simkhai x Wolford top at the POSSE Party at Los Angeles’s Viper Room on June 6. The same article also describes a selfie from June 5 in which she wore a black bra beneath a sheer blouse. Those are two separate outfits, not one event look. E!’s June 8 report distinguishes them.
September: Florence Pugh’s layered Dior look
At the September 9 New York screening of We Live in Time, Florence Pugh wore a sheer Christian Dior dress over a black bralette and high-waisted underwear. The lingerie layers are an important distinction from a fully sheer or topless look. ABC News quoted Pugh reflecting on clothing and backlash in comments originally made in a 2023 Vogue interview: “I’ve never been scared of what’s underneath the fabric. If I’m happy in it, then I’m gonna wear it.” The same ABC report attributes to her, in the context of past controversy, the question: “How can my nipples offend you that much?” ABC News’s September 10 coverage reports the screening look and the remarks.

Julia Fox: an illusion outfit in April, a sheer gown in December
April: A novelty illusion, not a topless look
Fox’s April 11 Los Angeles outfit used a lifelike bikini illusion, with “closed” printed on the front of the panties. Glamour’s description makes clear that it was a provocative printed garment, not a conventional topless look. Glamour’s April 12 report explains the outfit’s construction.
December: A sheer Victorian-inspired gown
At the December 2 Fashion Awards at London’s Royal Albert Hall, Fox wore a Victorian-inspired gown by Dilara Findikoglu. Bustle described a translucent base with lace details, a chest cutout and a sheer back. Unlike the April illusion garment, this was a genuinely sheer gown. Bustle’s December 3 coverage describes the design.

Sheer fashion has a longer runway history
The celebrity looks sat within a broader fashion context. The Guardian’s report on Yves Saint Laurent’s autumn/winter 2024 Paris show described transparent textiles and connected them with the house’s history, including a 1968 “see-through blouse.” That runway reference helps place sheer clothing as a recurring design idea; it does not establish that the collection or its models were making a Free the Nipple campaign statement. The Guardian’s February 28 report covers the show.
