Rowan Atkinson’s McLaren F1 was involved in two crashes during his ownership, but the reports do not establish exactly how much profit he made. He bought the car in 1997, paid for major repairs after a 2011 crash, and sold it in 2015 for a reported £8 million or more. That sale price far exceeded the reported purchase price; it is not a verified net-profit figure once repairs and other costs are considered.
How many times was Rowan Atkinson’s McLaren F1 crashed?
Two crashes were reported during Atkinson’s ownership. Carsales dates the first to 1999 and the second to 2011. Reports differ on where the later crash happened, so the year is the more reliable detail to cite.
What happened to the car in the 2011 crash?
The 2011 accident led to extensive repairs. ITV News and evo reported a £910,000 repair or insurer bill. Evo also reported significant chassis rebuilding at the McLaren factory, indicating the work went beyond routine body repairs.
How much did Atkinson pay for the McLaren F1?
The reported purchase price is not consistent. ITV News put the 1997 price at approximately £540,000, while carsales reported £640,000. Evo also gives £540,000, but identifies it as the F1’s launch price, which should not be treated as proof of Atkinson’s exact transaction price.

| £8 million or more | Reported 2015 sale price | ITV News and evo (2015) |
Did Atkinson make a profit when he sold it?
The reported sale price was far above either reported purchase figure, but the available figures do not reveal his net profit. Using ITV’s approximate £540,000 purchase price and the reported £8 million sale price gives a gross difference of about £7.46 million. That calculation leaves out the £910,000 repair bill and any other costs of ownership or sale; it is not a complete accounting.
Atkinson explained his decision in a Taylor & Crawley brochure: “I bought it for the quality of the thinking behind it. Now it has become a thing of value, it is time for someone else to enjoy it.” The sale came after he had reportedly driven 41,000 miles in the car since buying it in 1997, according to evo.
