There is no verified public figure for Barenaked Ladies’ upfront payment for creating or licensing The Big Bang Theory theme. The clearest recent comment concerns royalties: in a February 2026 interview, band member Ed Robertson said his royalties were somewhere between seven and ten digits, but did not give an exact total. That is his estimate of royalties over time—not a disclosed initial fee or the band’s total earnings.
What Ed Robertson has said about royalties
TVLine reported on February 9, 2026, that Robertson declined to give an exact royalty total. “It’s not seven digits, and it’s not 10 digits, but it’s in between those somewhere,” he said. He also described the song’s financial impact as life-changing and said it dwarfed the band’s hit “One Week.” TVLine’s report does not specify a currency amount or establish that the figure represents all money earned by the band.
That comment is the strongest recent public estimate in the reporting available, but it should not be mistaken for a contract figure. It addresses Robertson’s royalties, not a one-time payment for writing, recording, or licensing the song.
Upfront fee, royalties, and total band proceeds are different figures
- Upfront fee: No verified amount for the original creation, recording, or licensing deal is publicly disclosed in the cited reporting.
- Royalties: Robertson gave a broad personal estimate, but no exact total or royalty formula.
- Band proceeds and member shares: The reporting does not establish the final allocation among members or the group’s aggregate receipts.
Without the contract or an audited accounting, those figures cannot be combined into one reliable answer to “how much were they paid?”

What Steven Page’s lawsuit reportedly claimed
In 2015, former member Steven Page sued over his claimed share of the theme-song proceeds. Courthouse News Service reported that the complaint alleged the song had generated “several million dollars,” claimed Page was entitled to 20 percent, and valued his requested share at at least $1 million. Those were allegations described in the lawsuit reporting, not a verified accounting, court finding, confirmed award, or reported settlement amount. Courthouse News Service’s account does not establish the lawsuit’s final outcome.
How the theme came about
TVLine reported that The Big Bang Theory co-creator Chuck Lorre saw Barenaked Ladies perform in 2005, heard Robertson freestyle about the origins of the universe, and asked him to write the theme. Robertson reportedly wrote it in about 15 minutes while taking a shower. These are details from TVLine’s account, rather than publicly disclosed contract or production records.

CBS News reported that Barenaked Ladies created and recorded the theme for the series. A full-length version appeared in 2007, and the band later included it on its 2011 best-of album, Hits from Yesterday & the Day Before. CBS News’ report provides that release context.

The cited coverage does not reveal the initial fee, the deal’s licensing terms, the royalty formula, an exact royalty total, or a final contractual split among the band members. It also does not establish a final court judgment or settlement figure for Page’s claim. General estimates of what television theme songs can earn would not answer what this particular contract paid.
