There is no universal heat scale, so this guide uses the labels in a practical, relative sense: plot-first, story-and-sex balance, and erotica-forward. The picks below span historical and contemporary romance, erotic short fiction, and a poly sports romance; they are examples, not a definitive ranking.
How to choose by heat and story
Marie Claire’s 2025 erotic-novel guide groups books as mild, medium, and hot according to the relative balance of plot and sex. Those are the publication’s editorial judgments, not an industry rating or a guarantee that every reader will find a book equally explicit. Its [recommendations] include plot-led romance as well as more erotica-forward fiction.
- Plot-first: Start with a romance whose relationship and surrounding story are central; the sex is one part of the reading experience.
- Story and sex in balance: Look for erotic romance, where a romantic arc and explicit material both matter.
- Erotica-forward: Choose a collection or novel in which sexual content is a central draw. Check the publisher’s description rather than assuming every book called “spicy” reaches the same level.
Books to consider
For plot-first historical romance
Julia Quinn’s The Duke and I and Evie Dunmore’s Bringing Down the Duke appear in Marie Claire’s mild-spice grouping. They suit readers who want a historical romance premise and a substantial story alongside romantic heat. The classification is Marie Claire’s, not a standardized content rating.
For erotic short fiction
Best Women’s Erotica of the Year, Volume 7, edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel, offers a collection rather than one extended romance. Simon & Schuster’s publisher listing identifies Cleis Press as the publisher and gives a December 21, 2021 publication date, 270 pages, and ISBN 9781627783118. The page lists a trade paperback and an ebook.

For contemporary erotic romance
Sylvia Day’s Bared to You, the first book in the Crossfire series, is included in Penguin Random House’s selection of kinky romance books. PRH lists a paperback edition. See its selection and listing for publisher details.
For poly, inclusive sports romance
Emily Rath’s Pucking Around is described by Penguin Random House as an inclusive, poly, kink-friendly “why choose” hockey romance. “Why choose” signals a relationship setup that does not follow a single-partner convention; use the publisher’s description to judge whether that configuration interests you. PRH lists a paperback edition in its kinky-romance selection.
For classic erotic fiction
Anaïs Nin’s Delta of Venus appears as a paperback in Bookshop.org’s Romance – Erotica category. The category is a place to browse listings, not a heat rating; availability and displayed editions may change.
For contemporary romance with suspense
Scandalized by Lauren Billings, writing as Ivy Owens, combines contemporary romance with suspense, according to Hachette UK’s publisher page. The page includes praise from Rosie Danan, author of The Roommate: “Scandalized is the definition of spicy – bursting with tension and teasing, banter and blistering chemistry”. That is publisher-hosted endorsement copy, not an independent heat assessment.
Where to buy and what to check
Publisher pages are useful for confirming bibliographic details and following retailer links. Bookshop.org’s erotica category provides another browsing route and says its model supports independent bookstores. A title’s format and stock can vary by retailer and territory, so verify the actual edition on the product page before ordering.
Quick Recap
- Check whether the listing is for paperback, trade paperback, ebook, or another format.
- Match the title and edition details, such as the ISBN when one is provided, to avoid selecting a different edition.
- Read the description and any available content information for themes or material that may affect your comfort; a broad “spicy” label does not explain every book’s contents.
