Apple’s Iconic “1984” Super Bowl Ad: How It Almost Didn’t Air

Apple’s board wanted the finished “1984” commercial’s Super Bowl airtime sold. The 60-second ad aired anyway, though sources differ on exactly how it was kept on the schedule.

Apple’s “1984” commercial aired nationally during Super Bowl XVIII on January 22, 1984, but the company’s board had wanted the airtime sold after seeing the finished ad. The 60-second spot ran anyway, two days before Apple introduced the Macintosh. Accounts agree on the near-cancellation and the broadcast, but differ on exactly how the airtime was kept.

What happened in Apple’s “1984” ad?

The commercial aired during the third quarter of Super Bowl XVIII on January 22, 1984, announcing the Macintosh introduction scheduled for January 24. Directed by Ridley Scott, the minute-long film shows a monochrome, tightly controlled society listening to a Big Brother-like speaker. A pursued heroine runs into the hall and hurls a sledgehammer at the screen.

The closing card reads: “On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you’ll see why 1984 won’t be like 1984.” 9to5Mac reproduces the end-card wording.

Why did Apple’s board want the airtime sold?

Apple’s board disliked the finished commercial and wanted the Super Bowl airtime sold. The ad’s creative premise drew on George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, using the Big Brother figure to evoke conformity and freedom. In a TIME interview, Steve Hayden, who created the ad with Steve Jobs at Chiat Day and wrote the dictator’s speech, described the personal computer as a tool for people to communicate and make information. On the identity of the dictator, Hayden said, “Many think the dictator is IBM, but it was [also] faceless authoritarian government.”

How did the commercial almost fail to air?

The accounts agree that Apple’s board wanted the airtime sold and that the 60-second commercial ultimately aired. They differ on the mechanics, so there is no single settled backstage sequence.

  • HISTORY.com says the agency, Chiat/Day, intentionally failed to sell back the airtime.
  • 9to5Mac reports that the agency sold the 30-second cut but kept the longer slot.
  • The Washington Post, quoting Macintosh marketing director Mike Murray, says the 60-second slot could not be resold and Apple had no other material to show.

These versions support the same outcome—the 60-second ad aired despite the board’s objection—but do not establish an uncontested account of who made the decisive call or precisely what happened to the shorter slot.

What shaped the ad’s most memorable image?

Hayden told TIME that a Chiat Day creative director first proposed a baseball bat as the heroine’s weapon, and that Scott suggested a work hammer as more international and visually powerful. Engadget, relaying Hayden’s recollection, gives a more specific version: Scott called a baseball bat “far too American” and said a sledgehammer would be “a more universal symbol.” That wording is Hayden’s reported recollection, not an independently verified production transcript.

Was the Super Bowl broadcast the ad’s only airing?

No. HISTORY.com and The Washington Post report that news programs replayed the spot after the game, turning the commercial into news content. Engadget also reports an earlier local broadcast in Twin Falls, Idaho, on December 31, 1983, based on Hayden’s recollections. That was a secondary-reported local airing, distinct from the national Super Bowl broadcast.

What can be said about the ad’s impact?

The sources support that the ad received news-show replays and helped establish Macintosh name recognition. They do not quantify a causal sales effect or substantiate a numeric audience reach attributable to this single commercial. The story is therefore well supported as an account of a high-profile ad nearly canceled by its client, not as a measured claim that the ad produced a specific sales increase.
