5 M*A*S*H Cast Members Who Left the Show—and What’s Known About Why

Four of the best-known M*A*S*H cast departures were Wayne Rogers, McLean Stevenson, Larry Linville and Gary Burghoff. Their exits unfolded over several seasons, and the reasons behind them are not equally well documented. A fifth case needs a distinction: Loretta Swit had an opportunity to leave, but stayed through the series finale.

CBS aired M*A*S*H from 1972 to 1983, following the staff of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. Cast turnover came in stages, not as a single mass departure. The timeline and the characters’ exits are clearer than every actor’s personal motive.

Wayne Rogers: Trapper John McIntyre

Rogers left after the third season. A 1980 Washington Post retrospective described his departure as an exception to the show’s generally positive reputation behind the scenes. It also noted that Hawkeye and Trapper had been conceived as interchangeable leads, while Alan Alda’s relationship with the writers helped shape the show’s direction. That context offers a production perspective, not a definitive statement of Rogers’ own reason for leaving. The Washington Post’s 1980 retrospective is the relevant contemporary account.

McLean Stevenson: Henry Blake

Stevenson departed after the third season, and the series wrote Henry Blake out by killing him. The Television Academy’s interview archive includes creator Gene Reynolds discussing both Stevenson and the decision to kill Blake. The material identified here establishes the character’s fate and documents production discussion of it, but does not establish one conclusive personal motive for Stevenson’s departure. The Television Academy Foundation’s M*A*S*H interviews provide the archive context.

Larry Linville: Frank Burns

Linville later left the series, and David Ogden Stiers joined the cast as Charles Winchester. Linville’s departure is clear in the cast history, but the sources cited here do not establish a definite personal reason. It would overstate the evidence to present a commonly repeated explanation—such as a contract issue or dissatisfaction with the character—as the sole verified cause. TVLine discusses archival footage of Linville recovered for a later reunion special, but that is not itself proof of his motive. TVLine’s account of the reunion special describes that archival material.

Gary Burghoff: Radar O’Reilly

Burghoff’s departure is dated to 1979 in the Television Academy retrospective. Radar’s exit was explained in the story at the beginning of the 1979–80 season, when Klinger took over Radar’s company-clerk duties. That gives viewers a clear on-screen transition, but the available source does not firmly establish Burghoff’s personal reason for leaving. The Television Academy’s M*A*S*H archive discusses the character’s departure and the change in duties.

Loretta Swit: Margaret Houlihan (the near-departure)

Swit did not leave M*A*S*H before it ended. She was offered the role of Cagney after the 1981 television movie became a series, but the M*A*S*H producers required her to remain for the show’s final two seasons. Her case belongs on a list of actors who had a chance to move on—not among cast members who actually exited early. The Associated Press reported the Cagney opportunity and her continued run in its 2025 obituary. Read the AP report on Swit.

What the departure record can—and cannot—tell us

  • Timelines and story outcomes are better established than personal motives. The sources identify when several actors left and how their characters’ stories changed, but they do not provide a single conclusive explanation for every decision.
  • Production commentary is not the same as actor testimony. Retrospectives and interviews can illuminate the show’s circumstances; they should not be treated as proof of an actor’s private reasoning unless the actor directly says so.
  • Swit is the important exception. Her Cagney opportunity did not result in an early M*A*S*H exit; she remained through the finale.
