Their praise focuses on its writing, performances, political themes and character work—but it is not a verdict shared by every reviewer, and at least one critic found the season less cohesive than its predecessor.
What did critics say about Andor season 2?
Rotten Tomatoes’ Christopher Campbell gathered selected critics’ early reactions in a roundup updated May 1, 2025. The response quoted there is strikingly enthusiastic, but the piece is a curated collection of opinions, not a poll of all critics or viewers.
Brendan Hodges of Next Best Picture called the season “some of the very best Star Wars period.” Alison Herman of Variety described it as the modern franchise’s “gold standard.” Those are individual critics’ judgments, not objective rankings. Other quoted critics praised the series for its writing and its engagement with difficult political and historical ideas. Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the story can “dull empathy or amplify it, to placate people or awaken them.” Karen M. Peterson of AwardsWatch singled out characters who are “messy, difficult, and conflicted.” Read Rotten Tomatoes’ selected first reactions.
What aspects of the season stood out?
Writing and character development
The roundup’s strongest through-line is the praise for the series’ character writing: people are allowed to make compromises, remain conflicted and face consequences rather than serving as simple heroes or villains. Vulture’s Nicholas Quah argued that the season deepens the best parts of the wider franchise as well as reinforcing the show’s own standing.

Political themes and performances
Several reactions valued the show’s willingness to connect its fictional conflict to recognizable political and historical pressures. The praise is not just for scale or spectacle; critics also pointed to the performances and to the way personal choices give those larger themes emotional force.
Production design and visual effects
Reviewers also praised the production design, while the visual assessment was not uniformly glowing. Allison Rose of FlickDirect said the series made “slight improvements” over its 2022 predecessor, but added that “some CGI still falters.” That reservation sits alongside the positive comments rather than negating them.

How does season 2 compare with season 1?
The seasons pursue different dramatic rhythms. Season one’s prison-break storyline supplied a particularly concentrated arc; season two covers a longer span and builds toward the events of Rogue One, with the story’s political and personal threads unfolding across multiple arcs. That wider structure gives the final season room to show change over time, but can also make it feel less centered on one driving storyline.
That trade-off appears in the available critical response. Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup quotes Alan Cerny of VitalThrills.com calling the middle sections the strongest arcs. By contrast, the Metacritic season page includes a Newsday review that finds the sprawling portrait lacks a single storyline as galvanizing as season one’s prison break, while still recognizing the story’s weight and finality. See Metacritic’s season 2 review page; its review count and user submissions can change.

Which episodes or arcs did critics favor?
Some critics singled out the middle arcs, and episode 11 also drew praise in the roundup. These are specific reviewers’ reactions, not an agreed ranking or a guarantee that every viewer will choose the same highlights. The broader point is that the season’s impact may come through its accumulating arcs as much as through a single standalone episode.
Is season 2 essential for casual Star Wars viewers?
The roundup’s praise suggests that the season can appeal to viewers interested in political drama, moral conflict and character-focused storytelling, not only franchise lore. But the reactions do not establish how newcomers as a group respond, and the season is the conclusion of a story designed to lead into Rogue One. Viewers unfamiliar with the series may find the character relationships and long-form buildup more meaningful after watching season one.
