The sheet’s wider poem list also names “Die snoek” by Barend Toerien, “Die Sterrekyker” by Franci Greyling, “Testament” by Kobus Lombard, “Here be dragons” by Izak de Vries, and “Ek het ’n huisie aan die Rand” by Pirrow Bekker. The title’s “1” appears to identify a particular copy or part; the available document details do not establish its meaning.
Which anthology does it accompany?
The handout identifies Sprak en sprook en ander gedigte, with compiler/editor Carine Jansen van Rensburg and ISBN 978-0-636-18476-3. That identification comes from the reproduced sheet, not a verified current publisher catalog. Check the anthology edition and the poems assigned by your class before relying on an old copy or purchasing a book.

What it covers in “Saalhulp”
The questions address the character’s work, journey to work, duties, difficult circumstances, poverty, family, irony and poetic devices. The handout’s introductory explanation treats “saal” as a medical ward and the character as a nurse or helper.
The accessible reproduction does not provide the complete poem or all of its answers. Use those question headings to guide your reading, but do not treat unshown details about the poem or its character as established by this study sheet.

What it covers in “Krokodil”
The handout directs learners to anthology pages 99–102 and asks about content, form, rhythm and metre, word choice, focus, half-rhyme and figurative language. Its visible memorandum answers describe a crocodile with its eyes and part of its snout above the water and the rest of its body below.
- The eyes are described as amber-coloured and compared with a cat’s eyes.
- A metaphor compares the crocodile’s rough body with a tree trunk.
- The word “roerloos” is explained as indicating that the animal is still.
- The handout frames the crocodile as positioned vertically in the water, with its eyes and part of its snout visible above the surface.
These are the reproduced memorandum’s interpretations; the complete poem text was not available in the source material described here. Check each observation against the poem in your anthology.

What it covers in “Die tarentaal”
The questions connect the squeal of a wheelbarrow wheel with the guinea fowl’s call and ask about rhyme, mood, the birds’ actions, the shooting scene, death imagery, event order, time of day and the word “naadring.” The memorandum’s visible answers say:
- The poem uses paired rhyme, and its mood is “droefgeestig” (gloomy or mournful).
- A bird calls for its mate; the other birds are described as sleeping, keeping watch and dreaming.
- The closing stanza is treated as a shooting and death scene: one bird falls dead while the other flies away.
- “Naadring” is explained as expressing something approaching and as serving the poem’s metre.
These points report the handout’s answer key, not a definitive interpretation independently checked against the complete poem. The sheet itself asks why “naadring” is used instead of “naderkom,” a useful prompt for considering how sound, rhythm and meaning work together.

How to use the questions and answers
- Read the poem in the anthology first. The handout is intended to accompany the collection, not replace its poem text.
- Try each question before looking at the memorandum. Mark the line or image that supports your answer, especially for mood, metaphor, rhyme and metre.
- Compare your interpretation with the handout’s answer. Treat it as a study aid; where the wording or interpretation differs, return to the poem and discuss the evidence with your teacher.
- Check the class edition and current assignment. The reproduced sheet carries a 2016 heading, and its continued relevance to a current class or curriculum is not established by the copy alone.
