What Jolie’s lawyers alleged in April 2024
The statement appeared in a motion filed in litigation over Château Miraval, the French winery in which Jolie and Pitt had held interests. The Los Angeles Times reported that the motion said: “While Pitt’s history of physical abuse of Jolie started well before the family’s September 2016 plane trip from France to Los Angeles, this flight marked the first time he turned his physical abuse on the children as well.” The Los Angeles Times reproduced the filing’s statement; it remains an allegation by Jolie’s legal team, not a judicial finding.
Why the allegation appeared in the winery case
Jolie’s lawyers argued that Pitt had conditioned a proposed purchase of her winery interest on her signing a nondisclosure agreement restricting what she could say about the winery and alleged personal misconduct. Pitt’s lawyers presented a different account of the negotiations and accused Jolie of wrongdoing in the sale, according to the Los Angeles Times. Those competing descriptions are positions taken by the parties in the litigation, not settled facts.
The motion concerned the winery dispute; it was not part of the couple’s divorce settlement. The Associated Press reported in December 2024 that the couple had reached a divorce settlement, while the separate Château Miraval lawsuit continued. The settlement did not resolve the winery case.

What Jolie alleged about the September 2016 flight
Jolie made separate allegations about the flight in an October 2022 cross-complaint. As reported by the Associated Press, she alleged Pitt grabbed and shook her, pushed her against a bathroom wall on the plane, and physically attacked children. Pitt’s representative denied the allegations, calling them “another rehash that only harms the family.” The Associated Press reported both the allegations and the representative’s denial.
A Los Angeles Times account of redacted FBI records said Jolie told investigators the flight from Europe to the United States took place on September 14, 2016, and alleged that Pitt was drinking and grabbed and shook her. That report describes her account to investigators and redacted records; it is not an independent finding that the events occurred. The Los Angeles Times summarized the reported FBI records.

What investigators and courts did—and did not—establish
The Associated Press reported that the FBI ended its investigation without criminal charges. Its account of a heavily redacted report said an agent had provided prosecutors with a probable-cause statement, but officials ultimately agreed charges would not be pursued. A probable-cause statement described in a report is not a criminal charge or conviction. The AP also reported that child-services officials closed their inquiry without a finding of abuse. These outcomes do not establish that the allegations were false; they also do not amount to a finding that the allegations were proven.
The distinction matters: Jolie’s lawyers made the pre-2016 allegation in a 2024 motion; Jolie’s 2022 filing described alleged conduct during the flight; Pitt’s representative denied those claims; and the reported investigative outcomes were no criminal charges and no child-services finding of abuse. None of those procedural developments converts the motion’s claim into a judicial finding.
