Her efforts are often playful and carefully engineered rather than grand. But while she is adept at creating moments of happiness for others, Amélie is hesitant when it comes to her own life. The story follows her gradual pursuit of Nino, whose fascination with discarded photographs from photo booths gives her a distinctive way to approach him.

- Quiet and reserved, Amelie Poulin spends her days as a waitress at a Paris cafe and entertains herself by playing kindhearted practical jokes on her father and her neighbors, finding love in the meantime.
When was it released, and how long is it?
Miramax identifies the film as a 2001 release, the year commonly used for the title. The Cannes catalogue records its production year as 2000, so the dates refer to different stages rather than necessarily conflicting accounts. The European Film Academy confirms the French title and identifies the film as French; the BFI lists France and Germany as its countries of origin.
Published runtimes vary by record: the BFI lists 123 minutes, Cannes lists 121 minutes, and Spain’s ICAA feature record lists 126 minutes. Later ICAA video certifications list 122 minutes. Use the runtime attached to the specific catalogue record or edition rather than treating one duration as universal.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is its version of Paris both appealing and debated?
The film’s carefully stylized, affectionate Paris is part of its appeal: Montmartre becomes a vivid setting for small mysteries, eccentric routines, and acts of kindness. The BFI describes Amélie as a major arthouse hit, while also noting that some viewers and critics found its charm overwhelming and questioned its rose-tinted picture of France. That tension is useful to keep in mind: the film offers an imaginative portrait of a place, not a documentary account of everyday Paris.
