She left the daily MSNBC anchor chair—not NBC News—and continued as the network’s Chief Washington and Chief Foreign Policy Correspondent, with more time for field reporting.
When was Andrea Mitchell’s last MSNBC show?
Mitchell announced on her program on October 29, 2024, that she planned to end the weekday show after the presidential inauguration in January 2025 and return to reporting. Her final episode aired on Friday, February 7, 2025. MSNBC’s verified-channel description called it her final show after 17 years and said she would remain with NBC News.
Why did she leave the anchor chair?
Mitchell said she wanted to spend more time reporting in the field. In her announcement, she explained: “After 16 years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most”.
Did Andrea Mitchell leave NBC News?
No. The change was a move away from hosting her daily MSNBC program, not a departure from NBC News. She continued as Chief Washington and Chief Foreign Policy Correspondent. The Associated Press reported that she had worked for NBC News since 1978.

Why do reports say both 16 and 17 years?
The figures refer to coverage at different points in time. The Associated Press described Mitchell as having spent 16 years in the anchor chair when she announced the change in October 2024; MSNBC described her final February 2025 episode as coming after 17 years as host. The dates account for the different tenure descriptions.
