SI profiled her at 57; her 2024 rookie debut was photographed in Portugal. Her story also includes a long career in education and her personal “slay the gray” message.
Who is Dr. Nina Cash?
Cash is a former higher-education leader and model whose career spans education, workforce development and, later, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. SI described her as having more than 30 years of experience in education and workforce development. Her education includes an undergraduate degree in human services, a graduate degree in negotiation, conflict resolution and peace-building, and a doctorate in educational leadership. An earlier finalist profile also lists a mediation certificate and reports that she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees as an adult student before completing her doctorate at 55. SI’s 2023 finalist profile and rookie profile provide those details.
How did Nina Cash win the Swim Search?
Cash was one of seven co-winners selected through the 2023 SI Swimsuit Swim Search open casting call—not the sole winner. SI announced that all seven finalists would return as rookies in the 2024 issue. Editor-in-chief MJ Day called Cash “a standout from the very first time we saw her Swim Search submission video,” according to SI’s profile of Cash. The result brought her back to modeling after retirement, in what SI described as an encore career.
What prompted her application?
In an interview with SI, Cash recalled that during a beach trip to Australia on Dec. 31, 2022, her husband, Aaron, took candid photographs of her wearing a leopard-print bikini. Seeing the pictures helped prompt her to apply. She said she learned the application period had been extended and made a submission video. This is Cash’s account of the events, as told in the SI interview.

What was her SI Swimsuit debut?
Cash’s first SI Swimsuit appearance was a 2024 rookie shoot in Porto and northern Portugal, photographed by Ben Watts. The location and photographer are listed in the official Portugal gallery. It was her debut in the issue, not a cover appearance.
The gallery credits looks from labels including Agua by Agua Bendita, Hunza G, Navy Ray, Room 24, Norma Kamali, ViX Paula Hermanny, Sara Cristina and Heavy Manners. Those are shoot credits; they do not by themselves establish that Cash personally endorses the brands.

Why does Nina Cash talk about going gray?
Cash has said she first went gray at 26 while pregnant, dyed her hair for years, and stopped coloring it in 2019. “Gone gray and still slay” and “Slay the gray” became her signature phrases and hashtags. These are her personal experiences and advocacy, rather than claims about how other people age. SI covered her account in its interview about going gray.
In that interview, Cash connected her rookie photographs with a message for women who feel they have missed their chance: “you can achieve your dreams and it’s never too late.” She also described her own reaction to the shoot and to changing attitudes toward gray hair: “But it’s wonderful to see that SI [Swimsuit] is kind of smashing that old stereotype because, you know, I’m 57, I am happy, I’m enjoying life.” SI reported her age as 57 in its 2023 coverage; that is a period-specific figure, not a current age estimate.

Cash has described practical skills from her work in education as useful on set: punctuality, preparation and the ability to understand other perspectives, including during stressful moments. Her path is therefore not only a shift from academia to modeling; it also reflects how she says habits built in one career carried into another. SI discussed this connection in its feature on the skills she brought to the photoshoot.
