Beyoncé’s parents are Tina Knowles and Mathew Knowles. Tina built a career in hairdressing, fashion design, styling and entrepreneurship; Mathew worked in music management, including managing Beyoncé’s early group and Destiny’s Child. Their contributions were different, and the family’s story is best understood through their separate careers and perspectives.
Who are Tina and Mathew Knowles?
Beyoncé was born in Houston in 1981 to Tina and Mathew Knowles, according to the National Women’s History Museum. Tina’s work centered on hair, fashion and styling, while Mathew pursued a career as an entertainment executive and manager.

Their professional lives intersected with their daughters’ early careers, but they contributed in different ways. The museum describes both parents as supporting Beyoncé’s early ambitions; it identifies Mathew as the manager of the early group that developed into Destiny’s Child. NJ PBS identifies Mathew as founder and CEO of Music World Entertainment and as a former manager of Beyoncé, Solange and Destiny’s Child.
What did Tina Knowles do?
Hair, fashion and styling
Tina’s work as a hairdresser and fashion designer connected her skills directly to her family’s performance world. She also helped shape Destiny’s Child’s look through hair and styling. In a 2025 Elle interview, she recalled doing the group’s hair and persuading Kelly Rowland to try a short haircut.

In a 2025 Associated Press interview, Tina described herself as “a driving force” in Destiny’s Child’s development. That is her own account of her contribution, rather than an independently adjudicated assessment of the group’s success. The group’s history involved its members and many other collaborators; it should not be reduced to the work of either parent alone.
Entrepreneurship and family life
Tina’s public identity also includes entrepreneurship and parenting. A 2005 Vanity Fair profile reported her recollection that Beyoncé was shy as a child and that dance classes helped her make friends. The account is a contemporary profile of Tina’s memories, not a complete record of Beyoncé’s childhood.

What did Mathew Knowles do?
Managing Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child
Mathew’s documented role was chiefly in management and the music business. The National Women’s History Museum says he managed the early group that became Destiny’s Child. NJ PBS’s 2020 profile describes him as the group’s former manager and as a former manager of Beyoncé and Solange, as well as the founder and CEO of Music World Entertainment.
That management role is distinct from Tina’s contributions in styling and presentation. Neither role alone accounts for Destiny’s Child’s achievements or Beyoncé’s career.

His account of the group
Mathew’s book Destiny’s Child: The Untold Story offers a related account focused on the group and his perspective on its history. It is not the same kind of source as Tina’s family memoir, and neither book should be treated as a neutral, joint biography.
How did Tina and Mathew’s family change?
Tina and Mathew married before Beyoncé was born. They separated in 2009 and finalized their divorce in 2011, according to Biography.com. Their daughter Solange was born in 1986, as reported in the same biography.

Where can readers hear Tina’s perspective?
Matriarch: A Memoir is Tina’s firsthand account of her life and family history. The Associated Press described it in 2025 as a 432-page Oprah’s Book Club selection covering her family background, entrepreneurship, Beyoncé and Solange’s Houston childhoods, Destiny’s Child’s efforts to get a record deal, and racism experienced by the family. Tina’s memoir is a personal account, not an independent biography of Beyoncé or a complete account of every public episode involving her children. Read the Associated Press interview about the memoir for context on her perspective.
The two books approach overlapping history from different positions: Tina’s memoir emphasizes family, parenting and her work, while Mathew’s account focuses on Destiny’s Child and management. Readers interested in the family’s story should keep that distinction in mind.
