Agatha All Along opens with a crooked small-town detective mystery, then steers toward a witch-led quest—and the two-episode premiere makes that tonal swerve its chief pleasure. Kathryn Hahn gives the macabre comedy a commanding center, though the mix of jokes, scares and ensemble drama is deliberately uneven enough that it will not work for everyone.
What happens in the two-episode premiere?
After the events of WandaVision, Agatha Harkness is powerless and trapped in a distorted spell. A mysterious Teen helps break her free, then asks her to travel the Witches’ Road: a magical gauntlet that promises a witch what she lacks if she survives it. Agatha gathers a coven and sets out.
The premise gives the series a useful engine: a formidable witch who has to recruit allies and rely on a group, rather than simply dominate the room. Creator Jac Schaeffer described the story as a coven-less witch being forced to form a coven, with community and belonging at its center. The official character descriptions distinguish the recruits by their magic: Jennifer Kale is a potions witch, Alice Wu-Gulliver a protection witch, Lilia Calderu a divination witch, and Rio Vidal the Green Witch. Sharon Davis, meanwhile, is not a witch.
That setup is the destination, not the premiere’s first impression. The episodes begin with Agatha as Agnes, a small-town detective investigating a murder. The performance is stiff and the setting feels like a warped television procedural; that dissonance is part of the joke, and a clue that the show is playing with genre rather than settling into a conventional crime story. TIME’s Judy Berman likewise read the detective pastiche as an early signal of the series’ shifts, before the Witches’ Road becomes the central quest.

It is best to know that the opening is intentionally strange, but not to expect the review to explain its reveals. The pleasure depends in part on watching the show’s false footing give way.
Is Agatha All Along scary or funny?
It aims for both: macabre atmosphere, camp, mystery and character drama are meant to coexist, not take turns in neat blocks. Schaeffer said the series is darker than WandaVision and leans into horror; that is a stated creative aim, not a guarantee that every scare lands. In the premiere, the unease is often part of the theatrical presentation, while the humor comes from Agatha’s sharpness and the show’s willingness to make the ominous feel knowingly excessive.

That balance divides critics. Lucy Mangan’s favorable review in The Guardian called the show entertaining and praised its movement from comedy to tragedy. Gavia Baker-Whitelaw’s more skeptical TV Guide review found the humor and scares ineffective, and criticized the visual style and thin characterization of the supporting cast. Those are meaningfully different responses to the same tonal wager, not evidence of a settled consensus.
The premiere’s camp is most effective when it reveals character rather than merely puncturing tension. Agatha’s theatrics are not just a comic garnish: the show is interested in the person beneath them. Hahn told the Television Academy that the role let the series reveal Agatha beneath her “performative qualities.” Schaeffer has also said that the story makes room for camp, sincere drama, small moments and spectacular comedy—and, inevitably, song.

Does Kathryn Hahn carry the premiere?
Yes. Hahn is the clearest reason the tonal shifts hold together. She makes Agatha’s sarcasm and appetite for performance feel like tactics as well as personality, so the character can be funny, threatening and briefly vulnerable without becoming a different person at each turn. That fits Hahn’s own description of Agatha as nasty, assertive, sarcastic and performative.
The critical disagreement is partly about whether the writing gives the rest of the cast enough to do. Mangan praised Hahn and the ensemble; Baker-Whitelaw argued that the series squandered Hahn and other performers’ talents. The premiere establishes the idea of a coven more clearly than it develops every member as a fully formed character. The road gives the group a reason to travel together, but two episodes are only an introduction to that dynamic.

Does the premiere live up to WandaVision?
It is more useful to treat Agatha All Along as a deliberate tonal turn than as a repeat of WandaVision. The detective opening carries forward the pleasure of watching a television form become a clue, but the new show points toward horror and a quest led by witches. Schaeffer called it a “puzzle-box show,” promising mysteries, reveals and unexpected turns; the premiere makes that approach legible through its abrupt change of frame.
Whether that change feels playful or frustrating depends on the viewer’s appetite for camp and tonal instability. If you want a straight horror story, a consistently frightening premiere, or a fully developed ensemble from the outset, this may feel too broad or too thin. If you enjoy a mystery that changes shape and a lead performance that can move between menace and comedy, the opening two episodes offer a distinctive hook.

What critics had seen when they reviewed it
The season-level verdicts should be read with their viewing limits in mind. Both The Guardian and TV Guide disclosed that reviewers had seen four of the nine episodes, so their broader judgments about the series were provisional. This review’s verdict is narrower: the two-episode premiere is a seriously sinister good time when its theatrical genre play, Hahn’s performance and witch-quest setup click; its horror-comedy balance and early ensemble work leave room for reasonable disagreement.
Disney announced the original U.S. two-episode premiere for September 18, 2024, at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET, and described the series as exclusive to Disney+. That launch announcement does not establish current availability in every territory. The official cast list includes Hahn, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone and Aubrey Plaza; Schaeffer is head writer and one of the directors.
