The revival came close to moving forward, but it has stalled—and there is no confirmed new series, network or streamer, or release date. In a June 10, 2026 interview with Us Weekly, David Faustino said he had signed a deal for a Bud-centered project and that the original cast agreed to return in recurring roles. He said the project hit a “speed bump” after an unnamed person outside the cast objected to its direction.
What David Faustino says happened
Faustino described a proposed revival built around his character, Bud Bundy. He said his original castmates supported the project and agreed to appear as recurring characters rather than return full time. Creator Michael Moye, Faustino said, flew to Los Angeles to work on a script.
“Matter of fact, I signed my deal,” Faustino told Us Weekly. He said Sony was “completely ready,” but that an unnamed person who was not a cast member wanted to preserve the original show and objected to another version. Faustino put it this way: “There is a person who I won’t name — not a cast member — who had decided that … they wanted to hold on to what the show was, and didn’t ever want to let any other version ever go out.”
That account comes from Faustino’s interview. The person he described has not been identified, and the cited interview does not provide an on-record explanation from Sony or that person. Faustino’s comments therefore describe why he believes the project stalled; they are not confirmation of a new Sony-backed series.

How the 2025 animated revival fits in
There are two separate status updates, and the available reporting does not establish exactly how they relate. In July 2025, EntertainmentNow reported that Sony had confirmed the earlier animated revival was no longer in development. In June 2026, Faustino described a Bud-centered revival that had come close to proceeding before it stalled over a story-direction objection.
The sources do not establish whether Faustino was discussing a later stage of the animated project or a distinct attempt. It is safest to treat the 2025 report as the status of that animated revival and Faustino’s 2026 remarks as his account of a project that came close and then hit a setback—not as an announcement that a reboot has been ordered.
