Adolescence was filmed largely in and around Pontefract, in West Yorkshire, using real local locations alongside purpose-built sets. Its much-discussed Episode 2 drone shot was a carefully coordinated camera handoff; each episode was presented as a continuous take, but the production made repeated attempts to get those takes.
Where was Adolescence filmed?
Much of the Netflix series was filmed in Pontefract, within the City of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. Production moved between locations around the town rather than filming everything at one address. Netflix’s production feature describes the filming area and sets.
Real locations and constructed sets
Production Park studios in Pontefract housed the police-station set and the Episode 3 interview room. Director Philip Barantini told Screen Global Production that the team also used a real house and a local community college for the school. A large, empty warehouse was converted into the Wainwrights garden centre seen in Episode 4.
Barantini said the family house was chosen to be roughly a three-minute drive from the police-station studio. That close spacing mattered because the camera had to travel between places as the action continued.

The published accounts identify filming areas and types of locations, not a complete visitor itinerary or confirmed public access. They do not establish exact addresses for every site, so the locations should not be treated as a verified walking tour.
Was Adolescence really filmed in one take?
Each of the four episodes was filmed and presented as a continuous take, with the camera moving through scenes and locations without a visible edit. That does not mean the crew filmed the entire series without stopping or attempting another take. If a take was interrupted, the team could restart and try again.

Barantini described a three-week production block for each episode: one week of cast rehearsal, one week of technical rehearsal with the wider crew, and a final week of filming. He told Screen Global Production that the crew did two takes a day during that final week, and that some episodes took as many as 16 attempts. Those are figures for this production, not a general formula for making a continuous-take drama.
The camera’s route had to work through rooms, buildings and vehicles while remaining in step with the performers. The close proximity of several locations helped make those transitions possible. Barantini described the coordination as “a choreographed dance and some things you have to tweak, but you’ve got to be open to that,” in an interview reported by the Associated Press.

How did they do the Episode 2 drone shot?
At the end of Episode 2, the camera leaves the school-area action and flies across town toward the murder site. The sequence ends with Eddie, played by Stephen Graham, laying flowers there. It was made to feel like one uninterrupted camera move, but the camera did not stay on the drone for the whole journey.
The plan changed to serve the story
The initial idea was for the drone to fly over the murder site and continue away. Netflix executive producer Toby Bentley proposed bringing the camera down to show Eddie at the site instead. Director of photography Matthew Lewis worried that the original return flight might pull the viewer away from the drama; director Philip Barantini and Lewis developed the revised movement. Netflix’s account quotes co-creator Jack Thorne describing the change as “the technical meeting the story and finding a fusion which is actually better than anything the story had come up with on its own.”

The camera handoff
Barantini described the practical sequence to The Guardian:
- The crew attached the camera to the drone with a hook and flew it across town.
- Lewis travelled by van to the landing point while the drone was in the air.
- At the landing site, Lewis and two other people caught the drone and detached the camera.
- Lewis continued on foot toward Graham, carrying the camera into the next part of the shot.
The van can be seen entering the car park as the drone arrives. The handoff let the shot continue through the change from aerial movement to a camera operator on the ground; it was not a single drone flight lasting through the episode.

Wind made the ending difficult to capture
Barantini told Screen Global Production that strong wind stopped the planned drone flight on Thursday. A Friday-morning attempt also failed, and the successful take came on Friday afternoon of the shoot week. The crew had prepared a fallback ending at the school gates, with Graham holding the flowers.

Netflix identifies the DJI Ronin 4D as the camera system used for the series’ moving visuals. That is the specific camera named in its production feature. The available accounts do not provide a full gear list, lens details or the exact drone model and aerial-rig specifications for the Episode 2 sequence, so the Ronin 4D should not be taken as a complete inventory of the equipment used.
For this production, the central challenge was not simply getting a camera into the air: the crew had to choreograph its movement, the drone landing and the operator handoff within the continuous-take presentation.
